    Moving a safe up stairs

I just bought the 24 gun bighorn safe from costco. I live on a second floor apartment with about 12 concrete stairs in the way of the safe and it's home. The safe weighs about 400 pounds. Need some ideas on how the hell to get this thing up the stairs. I was thinking on hiring someone but can't find anybody doing a google search.

    Thanks for the advice.

I'm locating in foster city (sf bay area)

Appliance dolley, straps, a few friends, patience, some beer (after the safe is in and guns in it, of course)

ask a few guys from your local UPS or FedEX if they need a little extra holiday cash after work an to bring their hand truck.

or you'll need a few friends and one of these.

make sure it's rated for 400+ lbs, has a strap, and has those things to roll on the edges of the stairs. most of all make sure the stairs can support 400 lbs + 2-3 male adults all at once.

Appliance dolly. They even make self powered ones although I've never seen one for rent. Google "Powered appliance dolly"

Shadow Cove apartments on Foster City Blvd? I remember living there and the concrete steps were very weak. Like others have said. Rent yourself an appliance dolly and a couple of strong friends...

Don't take this wrong, but 400 lbs. is very light...

I rented a power stair climbing dolly from a local outlet of a national chain. Mine was a Sturdy safe - and the safe door was removed while going up the stairs. That helped greatly...

Can you remove the door? Usually that's 1/3 the weight of the safe...

Make sure your stairs can handle the load. They have specs on that. With concrete stairs, I imagine they can without problem. But double check that! I think I violated mine...with no problem. But double check.

Calculate the addition of extra folks helping out, vs, the use of a stair climbing dolly.

400 lbs might be light for a safe, but for a second story apartment? Will the landlord squawk? Is there anything in your lease or rental agreement against heavy furniture like a water bed or safe?

                    ^^^that.

Almost all apartment leases will have the waterbed and aquarium rule.

Not sure if it's a weight issue,or a lots of water issue but I would ask the landlord. And if your worried about the stairs, there are several easy ways to
Add some support. A cOuple well placed 4x4's will do nicely I'm sure.Or go rent a couple Shoring Jacks from a tool rental yard.

I know of several people who are 400 lbs. Never heard of them busting through apartment stairs. 400 lbs is the weight of two grown men. If the stairs collapse with 4 grown men walking up them, then they are not up to code by any means.

Unless your 400 lb buddies are going to sit in the corner and not move for months at a time, design parameters for static vs. dynamic loads for buildings are quite different. Further a 400lb safe quickly becomes a 1000lbs when filled.

U-haul will rent you a furniture dolly. I've hired day laborers at Home Depot for this very purpose when noone else was available.

I rented a powered dolly from A Tool Shed, it made quick work of the stairs but my safe was a bit lighter, only 300 lbs.

If you can't find a powered dolly locally, come down to San Jose.
