    Ar-10 vs. Fal

Which rifle is better for a hunting rifle chambered in .308 and why is it better.

The FAL is sturdier by harder to hit with beyond 250yds. There is a reason the ARtenish guns have become popular in recent years.

      AR-10

The FAL is a world famous combat weapon, but few people know/understand the original version of the AR presented to the US Army was in .308 and they rejected it, and chose the AR-15 in .223

Back in those days... the .308 in an AR platform was a one-off that nobody had magazines for, nobody had parts for, etc etc etc...

FAL's have largely stayed the same, which is to say good but not really great, they are okay, but thats about as far as it goes, where as you can get mass produced DPMS uppers for .308 are punching out sub MOA all day long. You're not gonna get that with an FAL.

Then add in all of the wonderous variety of AR style platforms like quad rails, sling attachments, custom hand grips, all of the bolt on accessories that would go on those quad rails... how much of that is for FAL's? at the same price?

AR10 certainly has greater accuracy potential.

The things a FAL does well make it good for going to war but trying to make a 200+ yard shot to a vital area using the large peep sight is not going to be easy.

Mounting optics on a FAL isn't the easiest thing to do right. On an AR10, you're a $60 one piece mount away from a foolproof setup.

For hunting, AR-10 hands down and I do own both.

The AR-10 is more capable than the FAL is, because with the AR-10, you can change out anything and everything for nearly every purpose (precision shooting, close range combat, hunting, etc), but the FAL? You keep the FAL as it is, and it will serve you from hell and back, as long as it's a solid build/make, although most are, if not all. FAL = battlefield weapon, fine as it is, minimum modification necessary in most cases. Almost polar opposite of the AR-10.

Personally could not imagine hunting with a FAL. AR-10 will definitely be more accurate if you put a good upper on it.

The FAL will be more reliable, especially when dirty. It's also made for a BIG guy- I'm not sure who designed the ergonomics, but it fits my 6'3" frame perfectly.

The AR-10 can be as accurate as an AR-15, which is sub-MOA.

I find it harder to shoot the AR-10 as accurately as my AR-15 even though the capablity is there- it seems more sensitive to how you hold it, pressures applied, etc- but it's quite fun to shoot

I own a FAL -- great rifle and I love shooting it.

I'm gathering the pieces to build a 308 AR.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the AR

It's also a lot easier to find 80% lowers for AR10 style rifles if you like the idea at making one yourself. (Can't wait till I can afford the parts to finish mine! )

I would take a FN FAL rifle over an AR10 as a general over all rifle any day, I have owned both and my FAL has never let me know no matter weather, ammo, etc,my Ar10 was definitely more ammo picky .

If you go by the 'mall ninja factor' then the AR10 wins..... and all of you who say cant hit with a FAL beyond 250 yards? you must have sloppy lower to upper fit, canted barrels, loose rear sight assy's, etc..... No it is not a sniper rifle BUT it WILL hit 'Minute of Chest' out to its sight range IF you know what you are doing.... most of mine can do 1-2moa.

1 big advantage to me on a FAL, Mag release, I am a lefty and I can hit it with my trigger finger and dont need some adapter that is one more thing that can get bent or broke as an afterthought/accessory on the AR.

You can put eotechs on FALS,scopes,Aimpoints, etc ,rail forends, all that crud.

FALS have proven themselves around the world and still do.

Fal's will work in crap conditions a lot better than the AR10.

Quote from 'enegue-'Personally could not imagine hunting with a FAL. AR-10 will definitely be more accurate if you put a good upper on it. '

-guys hunt with FAL's all over the country and at least one guy uses one converted to .338 Fed(?) for hunting and everything in Alaska. There is even one converted to 8mmMauser..

Basically a FAL in its pure form is lean like a Cheetah, a man's rifle....

I went through the same dilemma a few months ago. Wanted to build an ar10 just because of ease to find parts and such. I ended up going FAL and I'll be picking mine up soon. It's on Dros as we speak. I can't wait to go get it

Then again it's not for hunting for me

Minute of chest works great in a war where wounding is better than a clean kill (because it take more people to care for a wounded soldier than a dead one).

On a hunt the target you want to hit is smaller.

A FAL peep sight isn't going to cut it.

2 MOA is kind of ****ty in terms of hunting rifles.

An AR10 has superior iron sight options and it's easier to scope. Thats not "mall ninja" in my book.

It used to be that AR10s were much more expensive than building up a FAL kit but those days are over. If TM has a sale on blem lowers and you find a DPMS upper on sale, your price of entry is lower than a decent FAL (that is built with a used parts kit).

I love FALs but precision they are not, that being said, I could lock an AR-10 in a vise and beat it to pieces with my FAL and still shoot all day. :-)
