Thanks for the reminder, mine is up in 2013 and since the world ends in 2012 I'm good right?

I suppose if a gunshoppe business wanted to have a newsletter or monthly bulletin, they could easily incorporate a reminder for either special birthdays or HSC expiration into their mailers. I would even think it's a bit of good marketing, but... (there's always a but isnt there?!) lots of gun owners are skittish about being in a database. I think I would probably look at it like "I'm already in dozens of them, whether its online purchases at midway, natchezss, cabela's, etc etc etc... so is that one going to be any more dangerous or innocuous than any of the others?" probably no worse. But (yet another but!!!!) large online companies *probably* spend more time/resources on protecting customer data with trained professional IT security staff or use a service that does. Mom and Pop gunshoppes, not so much... so I think that would be the biggest risk.

You'd be surprised how many big time corporations get their data hacked or some how leaked out and they always end up sending out Privacy Concern Letters. I never really get that from Mom and Pop Gun Shops. They also usually keep their records on standard paper versus online database.

Well, I know what you mean but not really, I have even gotten... I've lost track, at least 3 I can remember for sure letters from the V.A. because some guy in Wash DC lost a laptop or something and the personal records of thousands of vets was compromised. And I know the company I work for has been attacked many times... bot armies from China, Eastern Europe, South America. They never give up, but when there's a lure of money to steal and the anonymity of the intertubez there's often not much risk to them to try.

Granted not even Anon is truly anon, but look what they did when they found they were penetrated... they punked HBGary and huge! If anyone should be immune to that it should be them...

Yeah, when you lose the original, but the replacement expiration date is the same as the original, so unless you lost it in the first two years it does not make sense to get a replacement.

When you HSC card expires, you have to start all over and the cost is $25.

                3. How much does the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) cost?

The fee for taking the Handgun Safety Certificate Test and obtaining a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) is twenty five dollars ($25). The $25 fee entitles you to take the test twice if necessary.
                12. If I lose my Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) can I get a replacement?

Yes. A replacement Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) is available only through the DOJ Certified Instructor who issued your HSC. The HSC replacement cost is $15. The replacement HSC will reflect the same expiration date as your original HSC.

Just had to renew mine. The place I went to did not even make me take the test! Just showed them my expired one and then paid 25 for it. Gave me a credit for 25$ to use at the store.
