    Guns from 50 years ago.....

Today we have AR's , Clocks, Benelli state of the art shotguns, Red dot sights, lasers , etc.

How would one feel today with the stuff that was available 50+ years ago ?

How would a person feel with a basic 4 inch 38/357 revolver, a 1911, 5 shot two inch 38, 12 gauge pump and Marlin 30-30 in a closet?

Or an M1a, Garand, BAR, Luger, BHP, one of the many commercial semiauto hunting rifles or shotguns available at the time... Your collection is more like what was available 75 years ago to be accurate. Now to answer your question, I'm cool with that collection and it actually sounds very close to the core of what I have now. Except no Marlins! Pre-64 Winchester fanboy here.

I am not sure of the question. The majority of my small arsenal are guns from fifty years ago, and I feel fine about it. There is not much new under the sun, if anything.

What are the greatest achievements in gun tech between then and now? Polymer? Higher capacity? It seems like since the introduction of metallic cartridges and auto loaders, we have havent seen anything "revolutionary".

I hear a lot of people saying that w/o AR's and 10+ magazines they fell like they can not effectively defend themselves.

Dont take it the wrong way. I think people should have what they want.

I love cool looking guns with drum magazines , red dot sights and lasers.

But I would never feel unsafe without them.

Even on duty , many times I carry an 8 shot Sig 45 (P220) and Remington 12 gauge pump in the car.

Its not the gun. It is the guy (or gal) behind the gun that makes it effective.

I like my lever guns. Never use optices and always come home first in hunting season.

Well, you've just listed my GTGs except I have 3 pre '64 Winchester '94s in 30-30 an the only Marlin lever gun I have is a .22lr.

Hell, I fell comfortable enough with a .45 Kentucky FL pistol, a .54 cap lock rifle and my SxS 12g frontloader. When I need to feel tacticool, I can grab a C&B revolver and my .54 cal swivel gun (two barrels).

Of course, if 50 years old (or a copy thereof) is the only requirement, Why not include the +64 year old AK47? BARs, Thompsons, Grease guns, etc. have been around even longer than that. How about the FA broomhandle pistols?

I would feel great if this stuff has been around longer, then there would be far less stigma against black rifles and perhaps we wouldn't have to neuter them.

The operating mechanisms of guns haven't changed much in the past 50 years.

The real advances have been in techniques of mass production of guns, e.g. use of polymers and non-ferrous alloys, CNC machining, metal injection molding, etc.

It used to cost the average person a month's pay or more to buy a gun. Now it costs about a week's pay.

And yet, ironically, is it not true that 50+ years ago the average person DID own guns, while it seems today the average person owns none and gets all his/her knowledge about guns from movies and video games.

I would guess there is probably one hanging on your wall right now. Greatest thing since the sun dial. I have several.

I dont have any problem using a BB'd AR for defense. My domicile is too small to use a rifle effectivley (as opposed to a pistol) anyway. In an unrest situation, I have set up a plan with my nieghbors to patrol the roof line and all entrances to the building using our various rifles and shotguns. The BB wouldnt bother me, cause I would have taken the damn thing off anyway... That said, more rounds are better in my opinion.

I know several cops that bet their lives on older tech, with or without higher cap mags, because its simple, proven effective and most importantly they know how to use it.

I guess that depends on the gun (and the pay).

I am fine with old guns. I prefer them, in fact.

I have bought guns which cost less than an hour's pay and I have bought guns that cost me about two month's worth of income. I don't see what you are trying to get at here.
