OK, I did some shooting for a short time at the LAPD Harbor Range in San Pedro. Not a bad layout. It's outdoors, so you get some nice natural lighting. It's on Gaffey, so it's not too far from the main drags of the city -- it's not like you have to go to the boonies. It's only 2 minutes away from Home Depot. So it's convenient.
There's no range officer giving commands; there's an officer who manages the place but he doesn't give commands. You just do your thing (safely, of course).
One not so great thing, is that your targets are fixed at 25 yards. Nothing inbetween.
Like somebody said, there's a lot of retirees who hang out there on certain days, shooting their rimfires.
