    LAPD Harbor Range?

    Hey all,

I was looking around at the local range list on the NRA website when I noticed the listing for the LAPD Harbor Range in San Pedro. According to the NRA site they have an outdoor 25 yard pistol and rifle range.

Has anyone here tried it out? Especially the rifle range part! Any details would be great!

It would save me, as well as others in the South Bay, from a long drive to go play with our new, uhm, stipped lowers.

    Cheers

    Tom

If you find anything about it being open to the public, let us know. I've driven by there a few times and always though it was only for police, but I could be wrong.

    Here's their phone number: (310) 548-7636

It is open to the public.. I have been there a few times. It is 25 yards ONLY. They have pits and counter-weighted targets stands. It is kind of nice not to have to stop to set/check targets. It is limited to pistol calibers and .22 only. So a pistol cal. carbine is ok, but no .223..

It is a pretty nice range with rather nice people. There is a group of old guys there who shoot .22 target pistols that are very friendly.

The 25 yards only thing kind of sucks.. But forces you to work for good groups.

The LAPD Harbor Range is open to the public 5 days a week (closed on Thursday's and Friday's).
        Saturday thru Tuesday, they're open until 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday is from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

It's a 25-yard range ONLY. They sell paper targets and reloaded ammo in their small office. It's sort of an "indoor/outdoor" range, with an over-hang on the shooting positions. To replace targets, you have to walk down to where they have the "pit" and lower the target stand for your shooting position.

I don't have their phone number handy, but you can find it easily enough. Their answer machine explains quite a bit. Plenty of free parking, but the range tends to get crowded quite often.

          Here's the direct number: 548-9268

The other number I gave earlier is a recording about police quals. This one here has a live person.

Great stuff! Only $5 to use the range all day. They open at 8am and end for lunch at noon, and re-open again at 12:45pm.

Up until now, I've been using indoor ranges. Notably the SoCal Sharpshooter range in Torrance which is about 5 miles away. But the Harbor Range is just down the hill for me and I'll probably be a regular patron. 25 yards is better than nothing. And you can't do better than that with the indoor ranges locally anyway.

Oh wow 5 bucks!!!! 25 yards only! Time to bust out my spoting scope, my eyes aren't that good any more.

Bummer about no centerfire rifle caliber rounds though. Like you losangeles its a short hop down the hill for me and it would of been sweet not having to drive 1.5+ hours to go test out my soon to be built rifle.

Oh well, have to say though, nothing quite beats shooting outdoors. Something about the smell of burnt powder mixed in with the fresh air of the outdoors.

LOL, Pitts! My wussy voice is muttering something about other people's bullets screaming above my head might not be fun.

            Cheers

There's a lot of open space on the hill for an outdoor range. I can think of some spots along PV Drive East, actually. Or PV Drive South would be great. There'd be some nice views while shooting. But then, I'm almost sure it'd meet a lot of opposition.

Oh brother, a lot would be a huge understatement. Imagine crowds 100 bored housewives deep, chanting we shall overcome! Imagine the RPV city council's meeting filled with 10ton SUV (getting 5mpg highway) owners, quoting enviromental impact studies on how damaging said range would be. Think of the resources some of these folks have in filing for injunctions, lawsuits, etc. I shudder even now just thinking of it. Sorta like the grim reaper just touched me or something.

It sure would be cool though. Cool ocean breezes on a hot summer day, banging off round after round, and for a break, taking in the majestic views of the Pacific ocean.

If your really want to try firing your newly built rifle go to LAX firing range in Inglewood. Pitfall is they will make u use "frangeble" rifle ammo. So it can get expensive... but so is a drive out to Angeles

Oh no don't get me wrong, I really do like the LAX range. Its just that I was hoping for a 25yrd rifle range to zero in my rifle once I get them built. Also, to use the proper round, not a lighter bullet with reduced powder load etc. But, I'll will for sure go there just to "play".

... When Dan is agitated/frustrated, make sure you are no where in range of him. I almost caught some debris from his cell phone when he launched it across the store the day the power went out at the range during New Years. That was a fun day.
