Tourist with a gun interest :)

    Hello everyone
I'm new here, and also not even close to California. But wait, let me explain!

I'm born, raised and currently residing in Norway. As in Norway, Europe, oil, polar bears, vikings and very VERY strict gun laws. Now, the situation is as follows:

The missus (or girlfriend, if you will) and myself are going on vacation to the USA next June. We're planning a couple of days in New York first, then a flight to San Francisco, before we road trip south by Highway one in the general direction of Los Angeles, turn left and go to Vegas for a couple of nights, then back to LA to catch a Dodgers game and our return flight.

Me and my girlfriend are also sort of interested in guns (me a lot, her not so much ), and we want to try to shoot some guns while we're "over there". She says it seems like a fun idea. Me on the other hand, I start planning these things 8 months before

What we want is essentially as many rounds fired from as many different guns of as many different types of firearms as possible within, say for example, 4-5 hours. We'd like to try glock/beretta pistols, small and big revolvers (.44 for the dirty norwegian, my dad made me watch dirty harry when I was 14 or so), a shotgun or two, and a few submachine guns and hopefully also a few assault-rifle type guns. My personal wishlist contain at least a beretta 9mm, p90, steyr-aug, ak47, an m4 or m16, and if possible a heavy caliber scoped long range rifle of sorts.

Now, I've sent a few emails to a bunch of different ranges, but I honestly have no idea where they are, or even what guns I can try while I'm there, so I'm a bit in the dark. Also, does Californian gun regulation say anything about no full-auto or something like that? seems all the gun ranges have regulations to that effect in their rules. How is gun legislation in Nevada compared to California on this point?

I'd prefer to go to a gun-range and be greeted by a professional instructor who has done this sort of thing before, as we don't want to end up shooting something that shouldn't be shot at by accident. The missus would probably need instructions to find the safety, and I'd need instructions to hit anything at all

So, it boils down to one question in two parts. Would I be better off doing this in california or in nevada (depending if there is single-shot only in cal. and auto in nevada,) and in the given area, do you have any recommendations for a gun range/professional instructor that could, essentially make this happen for us.

hey, if _you_ are an instructor associated with a gun range and can offer the services we're after, all for the better

Your best bet would be to rent guns in Las Vegas when you go there:

I would make sure they rent to foreigners before you made a special trip. Practically any range rents the types of handguns you describe. Fully automatic arms are unavailable to the general public in CA but, as pointed out, are available in nearby states. Hope you have a good trip!

other option is to take classes at places like front sight, gun site, etc.

mostly in arizona. they have 1-4 day classes.

seriously, what kind of gun laws are in norway?

If you're going to be in Vegas anyway, just use the phone book. Several places rent fully automatic weapons but the selection varies. They are all in the yellow pages. Just call, ask what they have available, get in a cab and go. You could visit several locations in one day and shoot quite a variety of weapons.

Have fun, eat too much, and don't gamble more than you can afford to lose.

I took my buddy from Germany without a hitch. He could shoot, rent, anything.

As a German citizen, he was also familiar with firearms, due to compulsory military service.

                He was just disappointed I didn't have a G3.

I have contacted front sight, so now we'll just see what they can offer me. looks good, so thanks a bunch for the tip, DedEye and Idivinag.

Idivinag, the gun laws in Norway are very strict. To own a handgun/revolver you need to get a permit from the police. To get that, you need to document that you "need" the gun for competition/recreational shooting, and that means you have to be a member of a pistol club for six months, before you are allowed to get a gun. The same goes for shotguns and rifles as well, but in these cases you are also allowed to document your intention to use them for hunting, by means of a theoretical test for shotgun, or a theoretical and practical test for rifles. Reasonable, really, it's all done to make sure if a hunter shoots the animal, it goes down first try.

There is no such thing as a carrying permit for any kind of gun, let alone concealed. Our police force as a rule aren't armed, unless on specific missions to catch bad guys who have guns or are otherwise considered dangerous enough to validate the police using guns. On a side note, there are very few crimes in Norway involving guns, and most robberies and the like are done with knives or other edged weapons, not guns.

Recently, there was actually a gang dispute near where I live, where the perpetrator used a samurai-style sword. There's usually at least a year or more between cases of criminals with guns showing up in the news, even in our capital, Oslo, where I live. And when there is something with guns involved, it's big news.

Another wall of text post, sorry about that. But I'm covering the weekend at work with nothing much to do at all. go figure

sorry about the double post, but now I feel really silly. I googled something like "Las vegas gun tourist" and got a great article from usatoday.com that directed me to two different ranges that cater to my wishes inside of vegas city limits

Actually, renting firearms to aliens is a problem on a federal level. However, not many ranges know about this, or choose to ignore it, and will happily rent to aliens anyway.

This is from the ATF website:

                        ----
(R33) I'm a nonimmigrant alien who is coming to the United States for two weeks to go hunting. Can I rent a firearm in the United States to use on this trip? What if I want to go to a shooting range one day - can I rent a firearm there as well?
As long as you possess a valid hunting license from a State within the United States, you may rent firearms to hunt and to use at a shooting range. If you do not have the hunting license, your possession of the firearms and ammunition will be unlawful. The hunting license does NOT have to be from the State where you will be possessing the guns and ammunition.
                        ----

In other words, without a hunting license, you're looking at a federal illegal possession of firearms. I guess that it can be argued that possession never takes place if someone from the range is present and stands close to the lane all the time, but I would check with the ATF first....

I know lax range has a decent selection and does rent. I taught a dude from the UK how to load a magazine. It was funny watching him stare at the wall of guns

Las Vegas is about a 5 hour drive from Los Angeles and although these guys say to rent full autos go to vegas. Most won't go due to the long drive. LAX Range is near Los Angeles and can't rent Semi Auto Handguns.

There are 2 shops in Las Vegas that I know of that rent full auto guns.

The Gun Store Las Vegas (posted above), they have quite a selection.

I think the other is this one Las Vegas Gun Range & Firearms Center.

                            But it can get expensive.

The point I was trying to make was that even if the range rents firearms, the alien might get busted for illegal possession of a firearm.

Also, I'm pretty sure it would mean some "problems" for the range, so I'm astonished that some ranges still rents to aliens. Also, most ranges around here only ask for a drivers license, which is not the same as being allowed to possess firearms...
