Cowboy Action Shooting

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I did have one further question if you don't mind.

I had a Winchester 94 lever action in 38/357. I had so many problems with it, I could never get it to load right without jamming at some point. I tried all sorts of ammo, both 38 and 357.

I have heard (and I'm sure this isn't the case) is that lever guns don't do well with 38 and 357 unless they get worked on at some point. Is there any truth to this statement? Did I just get a lemon in my rifle?

I just didn't want to get a rifle and then spend half of my match trying to fix jams since I'm going originally just to have fun and get some shooting in.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

The Win 94

was designed for a long cartridge like the 30-30 or 32 Winchester Special. It does not do well wiith any short pistol type ammo.

The 94 is known for having problems with pistol cartridges as Alan Block Notes. Keep it as a back up gun, get a Marlin, a 92 or a 66/73.

Wild bunch is a side match only! And not every club offers it and it does not normally happen every month! Formally seperate from SASS CAS rules, different equipment as well. And you can't shoot WB and CAS with the same equipment other then the 97 shotgun...

Then you are one of the lucky ones. Shooting SASS legal lead bullets? Good!

But if you are starting out, don't buy one. Simple enough. They have had problems, the other choices don't.

I started with a 92, too complicated take down and not as fast. I have taken my 66 and 73 and my wifes Marlin apart between stages at a match, repaired them, and shot the next bay without a hitch. A 92 or 94 has something happen you are done for the day!
