Cowboy Action Shooting

Hello,

Some friends of mine and I want to get into Cowboy action shooting.

We all live in Riverside so are looking for a group to shoot with in that area.

Additionally, none of us really have any of the necessary firearms so any suggestions on equipment is appreciated.

Second on checking out the SASS website. They have listed clubs all over. There are more then one in your area!~

Do NOT buy anything until you have attended a match, tried out some guns and decided which class you want to shoot in. Plus decide on a Persona, this will influence what you shoot.

For example, do you want to go B-Western? Shoot Black Powder? Percussion firearms? Are you shooting to compete first and dress up second? Want to socialize more then shoot?

Do you plan to reload? Ammo cost will differ greatly based on caliber, factory 44-40 in say, blackpowder is going to be pricey. On the other hand reloading your own cast .38 bullets is very cheap to do!

Have fun, it's a great sport and THE most family friendly shooting game around!

There are several in the area.

Norco has a group that shoots at Raahauges.
West End Gun Club is in Lyttle Creek area (not the pub range)
Decide on how historical you want to be. SASS has been becoming less and less so, now requiring 2 pistols and WB stages with 1911s. NCOWS is more rigorous regarding period correct dress and gear.

The SASS web site is the best place to find clubs near your area. Heres a link to a web site that might be of interest for getting started in C.A.S shooting. Personally my guns of choice in my Cowboy Action Shooting are Ruger Vaquero pistols, Marlin 1894 Cowboy Limited rifle and a original Winchester 1897 shotgun. Most shooters are using .38spl caliber pistol and rifles. I use .45 Colt because Im more of a purest. If you hang out at a club and observe, most shooters there will answer your questions and might even let you shoot there guns. Its the way I got started 7 years ago and its a sport that I do the most now. I just love it. Punching holes in paper just aint that fun any more after I got into C.A.S shooting.. I found a SASS club in Norco that has an orientation or new shooters event on the 25th of the month. I think my friends and I will go to this event and see how it goes.

I think we'll hold off on any equipment purchases until we try it out to see how we like it.

I did have one more question.

I noticed that a lot of the websites about SASS suggest that the optimal caliber is 38/357 instead of 45 colt or others. However I noticed that there seems to be a limited number of rifles in 38/357 as compared to 45 colt. It seems to me based on a cursory search that there are plent of revolvers in 38/357 but not rifles.

Does anyone know why rifles in 38/357 are not as easy to find?

The Rossi 92 in .357 will work just fine. Very light and fast handling. Mine will feed .38s no problem.
