Sure, sounds great no punitive measures for the thief. That will end the car thefts. I dont like seeing this end to the situation either but he should not go scott free. How many innocent lives did he endanger flying through the steets at 90 miles an hour? I dont know the facts here but I assume a stolen car and a high speed chase are not conducive to a slap on the wrist.

I'm thinking that car security systems need to start including a taser that electrocutes the thief when trying to start a car that has not had the security system properly disabled.

All these technologies supposedly going into smart guns could easily be applied to cars.
Thumbprint identifier on the outside of the car.
Walk up to the car, touch your thumb to the pad and the doors unlock.
Touch your finger to a "start" button on the dash and the car starts.
How simple is that?

Combine the security system with the onstar and a simple system to lock the doors and gas the thief.
Thief breaks into the car.
Attempts to start it without properly disabling the alarm.
Car doors lock.
Gas is administered to knock out the thief.
Onstar alerts the authorities.
Police arrive to a subdued thief.
How hard is that to do?

We have too many damn lawyers.

You will be locked in the car and gassed if you attempt to start the car again"

Other than the broken windows I wouldn't mind the bullet holes. I'd put a little notice near them about how these took care of the last guy who stole this vehicle, you want to be next? Something to that effect...

They already have devices like the club that do this, though I don't know if they are legal or not.

those are cool ideas, but i think there is just too much that could go wrong. Like if you were driving on the highway and it accidentally goes off. The results could be devastating.

How often do airbags accidentally go off?
These are handled by an explosive charge.
The knock-out gas could be just as safe.

They're designed and built by manufacturers that (sometimes kind of) know what they're doing. Aftermarket alarm company engineering departments are staffed by chimpanzees. I've had to remove more than enough of the stupid things because of how badly-built they are.

Not to mention that what you're describing sounds a hell of a lot like a booby-trap, the setting of which is a felony, IIRC.

If that's true, tell your friend to make sure he never comes in for auto repair if he's in the Bay Area. Something like that goes off on a car when I'm working on it... it's on. The pedestrian alarm systems are enough of a PITA, despite being frighteningly easy to bypass.
