    DOJ Approved Gun Lock?

What exactly is a DOJ approved gun lock, I figured you could just go buy any old master lock and lock your gun in a case. (12087.6. As used in this article: (a) "Firearms safety device" means a device other than a gun safe that locks and is designed to prevent children and unauthorized users from firing a firearm. The device may be installed on a firearm, be incorporated into the design of the firearm, or prevent access to the firearm. )

Effective January 1, 2002, no firearm may be sold, transferred, or manufactured within California unless that firearm is accompanied by a DOJ-approved firearms safety device (California Penal Code section 12087, et seq).

So what are the guidelines for this "approved lock," since I don't want to get bent over by Grant Boys for a $50 lock for a rifle.

    EDIT: Got bent over anyway.

I figure a lock like that should be fine for a Henry .22 lever action?

The lock must say "CA doj approved"

The lock sold on amazon looks to meet the criteria and should be fine. Make sure to bring the receipt and lock on pickup.

The big thing with the lock is the receipt. If you bring a lock to the store you must also bring the receipt dated within 30 days with the lock on it.

Ah ok thanks. The link provided says the lock is DOJ approved. I'll get that over some $50 lock the store tried to sell me.

Well, I came back to the store (Grant Boys) to pick up my rifle.

They ended up making me buy their stupid lock anyway. $56.

Brought my approved lock, with receipt, showed em the list it was on, and they still made me buy their lock. Store owner gave me some stupid false spiel about this certain model being the only approved lock for the henry lever action and risking his FFL if he didn't sell me the lock.

This is what I get for buying at a local gun store instead of online. Lesson learned. Too bad I have to go back for the hunters safety course on the 30th.

I would just return the $56 dollar lock and get your money back; as long as you know your gun is safe with your lock or a safe. JMHO.

The manager/owner told me he wouldn't let me return it "Damn well make sure you don't" Lol... Won't ever be back at that store after my hunters course.

I'll just order online and give Riflegear my business from now on.

$56 dollars for a gun lock! That's the most expensive gun lock rip off I have ever heard.

If I were in your position, I would contact the CA DOJ and check the legality of forcing you to buy their outrageously expensive lock in spite of the fact that you brought your own.

Gun safe exemption....you don't have a safe? I fill out the gun safe affidavit every time....just need to know your model number.....

Most people think it's just a expensive gun lock where in reality it's a tax on gun owners in California.

I don't have a safe, so I just bought my own $6 approved lock.

And thanks Malmon, I'll call up the CA DOJ.

                            So what's a $56 lock look like?

TMK, the store is in error and simply bending you over.
