Given the political situation, semi-auto handguns are the prime target for the anti-gun crowd. It is the drum they pound on the most. Followed by semi-auto rifles. Since we're looking at this lame microstamp bill, I'd focus on handguns until you get what you want. My priority list would look like this(If I was just starting
)
1. 1911 .45 ACP great platform, lots of possible mods. Everyone should own one(at the very least).
2. 9mm semi-auto, any platform. I would lean towards a glock on this because it is tried and true but, there are plenty of excellent firearms in this caliber.
3. Ruger mkII or mkIII 22/45 in .22lr. This is an excellent firearm. It will allow you to practice inexpensively. The controls are designed on the .45 ACP platform so, muscle memory will transfer to many different makes and models of handguns. Keep buying them until they ban them or you have every caliber and style that you want.
Then I'd switch to semi-auto rifles.
4. Anything in .308(M14, AR10, etc.)
5. OLL in .223
6. SKS or AK in 7.62x39
7. Ruger 10/22 inexpensive practice.
after that, switch to revolvers. Anything in .357 is a good start. Somewhere along the line, toss in a good 12 gauge pump action shotgun, precision rifle, and you're off to the races. With just this list, you've covered the most commonly used calibers.
.22lr
.38
9mm
.357
.45
.223
7.62x39
.308
12 gauge
Then just buy stuff as it goes on sale, or you find it.
I agree with mur, C&R are some of the best buys out there. The Garand is an excellent battle rifle. The mauser action is one of the strongest you can buy. Most firearms are based on military designs. Milsurps rule.
The odds of anything actually being confiscated are minimal.
