    Stupid steel cased ammo...

Shooting Herters .223 in my AR, it jams up, so I check it out; and the extractor ripped the side of the rim off the cartridge.. It took very little force to get the shell out with a rod, so I wouldn't say the shell was "stuck" in the chamber. Then the exact same thing happens in the Saiga 7.62 with Military Wolf.

Just found it odd that after hundreds of rounds with no problems this would happen two times in a row like that. Anyway I will still shoot it, and will bring my cleaning rod with me when I go out from now on.

Saiga and AK type rifles should have NO problems AT ALL with damn near ANY steel cased ammo. AR's are another story, however.

    YMMV regarding AR's.

Was the chamber hotter than it would have been during your previous experiences with this ammo?

I know the air temp is way up this week in your area, was the rifle in the sun, had you been shooting more rapidly?

I've wondered if the poly coating on the steel cases would adhere to the chamber walls in a very hot chamber....

Steel is typically lacquer coated, no? So your rifle got dirty after "hundreds of rounds", no?

I also understand that, unlike brass, steel expands when fired and does not retract whereas brass expands and then retracts.

I never shoot steel ammo. Never.

No, it's "polymer" coated unless it's older production. The polymer doesn't come off like the lacquer.

OP, welcome to the joys of shooting with steel cased ammo. Just be prudent :-).

The only steel cases I shoot go in my AKs and SKSs, which love it.
The ARs get sweet, sweet brass...

That's total BS. Back it up with some facts.

Crappy ammo is crappy ammo, no matter what materials it's made from.

That being said, it's always gone bang for me.

                I still prefer brass.

Supervisor @ Wally World that sold me ammo told me he used a box of Tula for his HK45 and it ripped the extractor right out.

Dont blame the ammo. Should of blamed the gas system.
Title should of been " Stupid gas system!"

If your ripping the steel, thats because the gas/ springs/ BCG is too light for it causing the chamber to prematurely open before all the gas escape. When the steel case is still fully expanded in the chamber your bolt is already opening causing the steel rim to rip which = stuck case in chamber.

The fix? FA BCG, heavier buffer spring, tuneable gas ports, mid/full length barrel or a combination of those will fix it.

As for the Saiga? I dont know because I never had problems with mines, yet.

                      1) The chances of a supervisor at Wally World owning an HK45 in the real world (outside of video games) hovers between slim and none.
                      2) IMHO he's full of it.

No matter how crappy the ammo, I want my gun to be able to digest it. All of my ARs have no issues with steel cased ammo, same with my pistols. I'm not going to say it's good ammo, but the steel used in the cases is very mild, the steel on an extractor is very hard. I sincerely doubt that any extractor is going to break from Wolf. I've never seen that happen, and never seen proof of that happening.

Just rumors repeated on the interwebnetz.

Now that being said, I hate the junk. I shoot brass case personally, but I do run steel in order to make sure it'll work.

Steel-cased ammo is for your AK.

BRASS-cased ammo is for your AR.

                        Any questions?

Never had a problem with steel case ammo in my AR and AK. I don't let my barrels get too hot and I know I've used lacquer and I think the polymer coating and to prove a point, reloaded steel cases and ran them fine.
