I lived in Berkeley at the time. There was a curfew after the first night to cut down on any rioting on Telegraph.

We were dismissed from class the next day to go join the protests. I took a long lunch while some of my classmates got arrested for marching on the freeway.

They briefly closed BART the first night and talked of closing the bay bridge to keep the masses away from SF. My 15 year old sister was stuck in the Mission for a bit when they closed BART. My family and a few friends prepared for a rescue mission across the bridge if BART wasn't reopened.

I had a close call the Friday night night after the trial ended. A large angry drunk gentleman approached my girlfriend and me on the street rambling about 'white bitch this and white bitch that'. Thankfully he stumbled by after I gave him the 'don't **** with me' stare.

Not dismissed from school due to any safety issues but so that you could go out and contribute to the anarchy?

The school has a policy of encouraging the students to engage in riotus activity?

I understand peaceful protest, however comma, when the National Guard and DOD forces are called out to quiet things down, why would the school add fuel to the fire?

I was there on the second day of rioting (April 30th) when LA County deputies ordered Lock Stock and Barrel in Temple City to stop selling ammunition and black powder. Pops had gone to Big 5, Mathews and Sons, Western Auto in Bell, and Papac Brothers, all whom refused to sell ammo. He picked me up after school, and after some phone calls, we went straight to LS&B to buy a few boxes of .45 230 FMJ. All they had were reloads. As we were paying, Temple sheriffs walked in and told the manager they had to shut it down. After the riot, we stockpiled, and I began to buy a bunch of hicaps and ammo for rifles I didnt even own yet. Lucky me

Over the next few nights, I rode in tow trucks with my dad and uncle into the city to tow burned cars out for the highway patrol. I remember passing Weatherbys' in South Gate, and they had guards on the roof armed with (probably Weatherby) rifles.

I was in Berkeley, not LA. But I agree, holding class and discussing the situation instead of the regular lesson makes a lot more sense than turning dumb kids, some of whom are itching for trouble, loose on the streets.

I remember 92... I was 10 years old... I remember my parents commenting on "the social injustice of it all" we lived about 240 miles away, I guess it probably looked different up close and personal.

One thing I did learn from all of that... the first thing I did when I moved down to LA was to buy a decent rifle (for two legged varmints) and a few K of ammo.

It was a surreal experience. I was living in SGV and remember seeing ashes on cars after the 2 or 3 of the riot. I think the riot made me question whether or not the police will be there to protect us after a major earthquake. To this day I still think LAPD under then Chief Gate deliberately allow the poorer area of the city to burn down.

I was at SC during the riots as an undergrad. I remember being out at the Price Club next to Hollywood Park that day buying a bottle of champagne with a buddy of mine for some chick he was dating. On the drive back to our frat house people were yelling at us to get out of L.A. and the employees in the price club were all saying they were going to kill somebody. It was weird but didn't seem too threatening until we got back to the house and saw the Reginald Denny beating live on TV.

The first night we went driving around to see what was going on and had shots fired at my car. The next day when things got really out of hand, the University ordered evacuation of all off campus housing, but a few of us stayed as our house wasn't owned by the university. Several of us were armed and it seemed at the time like a good idea to stay. The buildings and stores on each end of the "row" were burned down. Everywhere we looked people were looting and not at all interested in anything but taking what they could. The old pep boys on Hoover was being ransacked and I recall watching the CHP who were keeping the freeway on ramps by campus open grabbing anyone that got close to them and slamming them off their cars till they dropped what they had stolen and then letting them go. It was basically an all out free for all to take what you wanted. It was entirely opportunistic on the parts of most of the rioters I saw in South Central, and in no way a "political uprising" as others have called it.

We hung out on the roof of our frat house drinking and doing other things college kids do, only armed (not a good idea but we were young dumb and indestructible). The only people that were safe were those that were armed. Like I said, stores at the end of our street were looted and burned to the ground. Some of my friends still have videos that they had rented from my old video store on Adams and Hoover that was burned down. Nobody came near our house except to shout things because they saw guys with shotguns and AR's on the roof. The NG rolled around in their hummers on the third day and supposedly put a curfew into place, but they didn't say anything to us as we went to the store to buy beer after dark. It was common knowledge at the time that if you weren't ripping anything off, you weren't going to be hassled. I wish people could be more honest about what was really going on. It was a mass robery and nothing more. Maybe people were mad at first, but it was just an excuse. If it wasn't, then why didn't they travel to do damage? All the damage was done in the urban areas where easy access to free tvs and other consumer goods was more convenient. I still get mad to this day when I hear people call it the uprising or whatever other horse **** they call it besides the riots.
