Which calibers to keep?

.45 and .308 Both are military calibers. Easy to get ammo for.

.38/.357 Mag and 12 Gauge. This would cover all of my bases, great for hunting, home defense and SHTF. with the correct ammo you will be covered from point blank out to 200 yards. You can hunt anything on the planet, have a lot of fun at the range and have plenty of options for self defense. The ammo options and availability make this an easy decision for me.

- A revolver in .357 mag is a great self defense weapon and can be used to hunt. Shoot .38 special at the range, heavy magnum rounds for hunting big game, shot shells against snakes or to bag rabbits, squirrels etc, and there are many good hollow point rounds for self defense.

- A lever action carbine in .357 Mag is a lightweight, accurate gun that is great for hunting and can be used for self defense.

- A 12gauge is extremely versatile; bird shot, 00 Buck or slugs. Can use it to hunt big game, small game, water fowl, turkey.

If I was told to give up all my handgun calibers but one I'll pick 45 Colt. Not too many things can withstand a 255 gr bullet @ 960 fps. If that wasn't enough I can always heat it up to 325 grainers doing 1,200 fps

As for rifles well I only have one CF long gun and that's my AR15.

I'd pick a shotgun variant, possibly a 20 ga, because for ONE gun, there are many "no rifle" hunting areas in California.

Assuming you meant really a rifle and not a shotgun, My choice (I actually did this) was easy. Rifle 7x57 (if you didn't like boutique calibers then probably 7-08), and handgun 460 S&W.

Why? The rifle is small, and the pistol is not.

But seriously, the idea is do as much as possible with as little as possible, yes? I like the 7mm round, and the 57mm cartridge is great. 6mm off the 30-06 case size (I think?) and all that is needed to push the perfect bullet weight with the perfect balistics to the perfect speed of 26-2700 ft/s (where perfect is defined as what was determined perfect in 1895 or whenever mauser invented the cartridge. As told to me by those who may not know better anyways). very light @ 140 grain, and very heavy at 175 grain.

the 460? Pick what you want. long colt cowboys or rifle velocity. 200 grain bullets or 500 grain bullets or larger. Besides home defense/public carry, what CAN'T this cartridge do?

whiterabbit, nope - I didn't mean rifles only. I knew one guy who owned two calibers: .22Magnum and 12gauge. He had a Single Six Ruger, and a Remington pump. Said that those two could kill just about anything he wanted to kill, and that he had no fantasies about mowing down Russian paratroopers or hordes of looters with a pseudo military gun.

I'm leaning toward 9mm and .223 mainly because of cost and availability. I'll always also have a .22lr - because plinking with one is just great fun.

in today's world, I would stick with 9mm and 12 gauge
in the world after May 21, i would replace the pistol with a .308 for CQB and use a 40mm to reach out and touch somebodies.

9mm and .22 Long Rifle Cost efficient and I can shoot them at any range.

I sold my .357 a few years ago and bought a .22 semi-auto pistol and a .40 S&W pistol.
I recently found 100 rounds of .38 and .357 ammo. I bought a .357/.38 chamber adapter for my wife's 20 gauge single shot. Also got an adapter for a .410 that will let me shoot .32 HR Magnum or .32 S&W long. Next week I'll try them out.

Long Gun=41 Swiss rimfire,why cuz no one else would have one!
