    magazine question

    Hey guys first post.

I will be returning to the communist state of CA after my military tour is up. I just purchased a 75 round drum magazine for my ak variant rifle (and yes I've already checked out the OLL crap and do's and dont's for the rifle). I understand that it's illegal to bring hi cap magazines (to you and I they're just standard capacity) into the state. So my question is, how far broken down do the magazines need to be? More specifically my drum mag? It's one of those chinese ones with the winding handle on the back. It didnt come with any instructions on how to take it apart so i've been searching for info on that.

    Thanks guys

I think as long as it's completely non-functional you'll be fine. Don't know much about the mag itself so I don't know how to take it down.

Welcome back from your tour and welcome to Calguns! My understanding is that it cannot be in an operable condition. maybe post pics of the magazine and someone here may know how to take it down.

I am not a lawyer but my personal take on it is that if it can't feed ammunition, then it's no longer an ammunition feeding device. Some of those metal drums are a real bear to take apart.

            correct.

magazines are feeding devices. things that can not feed ammo are not.

Easy...To disassemble the Chinese 75 rnd drum magazine, open the cover and depress the spring loaded button. Turn the spring tensioning key COUNTER-CLOCKWISE and remove it. Next, lift the spindle out of the magazine. DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE MAGAZINE ANY FURTHER.
Rewinding the spring is a B*tch. My question is " Why didn't you buy a 100 rnd mag???

Try a Romi mag sometime. You can lose a finger...

When I bought the parts kits to build my long-body 10rd AR magazines from Riflegear, the followers and springs were in place. The floorplates were inside the bodies (or in the bottom of the bag).

It is a real pain to put that thing back together! But i've got it down now. I went with a 75rd mag because that's just what they had there at the gun shop. good sturdy magazine.

Do they still sell rebuild kits?

Give them a call, but I don't think so.
These were C-Prod 20 and 30 rounders and were originally stock from the 2008 Obama scare. Before they moved to the new shop, they had a parking lot sale and blew out a lot of overstock (including the mags) and a lot of other parts like f-marked FSBs, original handguards, barrel nuts, A2 hiders... you know, the kind of stuff that piles up behind the bench when you sell 20 Stag uppers every week and the buyers immediately hand them back and want them modified.

You don't want to know how much I paid for them... put it this way... I spent less than $100 including gas from Chino and back and lunch and I bought 12 kits
