If you don't have a safe they have to sell you a lock. That's why they ask.

or buy a safe like a good gun owner

In a perfect world every gun owner would have a safe, however not having one doesn't make one irresponsible. I can think of many scenarios which would limit ones ability to have a gun safe.

as long as you have the make and model I don't believe its constitutional for them to actually come to your residence and inspect said item. I'm not going to ask why the Sheriffs have your safe....
