No. But, a safe is highly recommended. Not very responsible to have firearms without a safe to keep them in.

If you don't have a safe they have to sell you a lock. That's why they ask.

Or you can bring in a receipt for a lock purchased within the last 30 days.

They want to know if you have a safe and how much room is left in it. That way they know how many more guns they can sell you.

Or sign the waiver saying you have a safe. Don't do this unless you actually do have one!

I leave all my locks at the store when a gun comes with one, others do as well. Just ask for one of those.

Stack-on. Doj approved locking firearm storage. Get em for like $90. Keeps the kids out, but not a thief.

IIRC, you have to show you "purchased" one within the past 30 days. I know, I know, symantics, but most gun shops are not going to give you the freebie if they can sell you one.

Ah for the days when grandpa kept the guns in a display case and hall closet.

Also kept the keys in the Chevy and the front door unlocked.

                            That is a bygone era.

No a gunsafe is not a requirement for the purchase of ANY gun
the only thing that is required is a "Ziptie" $5 china lock with a receipt from 30 days prior to the purchase of the gun
                              OR
a California approved gun store container

Though I think just about every gun owner should have a gunsafe
                              Required NO Recommended YES
