While difficult for the shop in these days and times I can't imagine why they would not have someone covering for them on a SATURDAY? I go into my shops around here during the middle of the week and they are ALL busy. I don't even want to go near one on a Satuday. You mean its not worth $12.50 an hr (total cost) x 2 to have a few guys there while you are out? Maybe it isn't in this day and age - I don't know.

If you think that's the total cost of hiring help these days, you are mistaken. Training, oversight, etc. It adds up.While difficult for the shop in these days and times I can't imagine why they would not have someone covering for them on a SATURDAY? I understand being upset. I always count the days until I can get my new baby out of jail...
Having said that, I thinks its nothing more than a mistake and inconvenience... The date on the receipt is NOT an appointment, its just letting you know the earliest they can let you have it. If he said you could get it Monday(they are always closed Mondays) then I'd understand being pretty ticked off, but what would you have him do? Call everyone with outstanding 10-day waits to make sure they aren't planning to come in? Maybe he should have called all his regulars to make sure they weren't planning on shopping that day either...
His closure was obviously inconvenient and you should have called - especially if you are traveling that far. The stars aligned and you got screwed.
I drive a half hour to go to Fort Courage because Tim and the rest of the shop are good people to deal with. He has been nothing but fair, if not generous in my dealings.
Just my $0.02....

In this economy?
Full timers might cost more, but PT and weekend extras? I know the tax burden is 18 to 20% but training and oversight? I'd think plenty of guys would like some extra money who already know it all

You might not feel that way, but I have seen it and had to deal with it. I put down when the waiting period ends, as well as the 30 day limit. I tell people to contact me near the end of the waiting period to make an appointment to finish the paperwork and pick up the firearm. But even with that, I have had people who think that 1 minute after the end of the waiting period is the time for them to come pick up the firearm. If I had a retail shop with specific hours, that would be one thing, but I work by appointment. Those type of people get annoyed if you are not available at that second.Kemasa.

First off, its a firearm store in CA... so a part timer costs $100 off the top for a COE (and it takes a month or so)
And yes, you need oversight and training (you have to have a second guy double check all the paperwork etc. for the first month or so, and spot check it after that)
then there is the aditional bookkeeping time, witholding, workers comp..
Lacky's are expensive.
Just because they don't get paid much doesn't mean they don't cost the shop a ton of money.Comment

Yeah, I believe it. They're probably the same people who neither show up nor call to cancel when they make a real appointment, too.You might not feel that way, but I have seen it and had to deal with it. That's a lot of aggravation if it's a $10 PPT.
The sooner we can get rid of this stupid CA bull****, the better. There's no reason why someone who already owns firearms (which the CA DOJ has in their records, duh) needs a waiting period, which is a burden on the FFL and on the buyer."[T]he liberties of the American people [are] dependent upon the ballot-box, the jury-box, and the cartridge-box . . without these no class of people could live and flourish in this country." -- Frederick Douglass (1892)Comment

Welcome to the world of firearm retail sales. Your new so I can understand the fraustration. If everyone posted a bad experiance they had at a gun shop we would need a whole new forum. I would not go as far as say, don't ever go back, but just let them know what happened and I bet they will make it right. Too many darn gun owners have hot tempers and that is just as bad. Stay cool, shake it off and its not worth the unhealthy stress.Comment

Gun shops still don't get why they are losing their a#$ to online sellers. They all complain that the buyers are just too cheap to pay 'Brick and mortar' store prices. In reality, the prices are higher and the service is lousy.
Buckhorn Guns in Glendora recently went out of business and Gunslingers tok over their location. This is fine with me, Jeff is usually (not always) a decent guy to deal with.
Anyway, Buckhorn had this habit of not being open during posted hours. The would put a sign on the window saying 'gone flying'. It used to really annoy the crap out of me. I showed my displeasure by spending my $ anywhere but Buckhorn.
Gun dealers need to learn customer service. If you need to close, give notice to your customers. The phone recorder is a great place to put the message. The other one is conspicuous signs on the door, as far in advance as possible. Finally, call the guys who are able to pick-up their guns. It is only logical that some of them will want the gun right away.

Unfortunately, Fort Courage can be a little flaky at times. I just deal with it for 2 reasons. 1st, he's a small business and a good, honest guy. 2nd, the gun store "pool" is a bit shallow around here lately. It sucks to have to tolerate weak customer service. You gotta do what you gotta do.R.I.P. Chris Kyle. 2/2/13Comment
