Yeah that was my first plan too, then I remembered I live close to the Hayward fault, aka earthquake country.

Securing a safe in an apartment

You mean drill through the sides of the safe? I'd probably have to buy a bigger drill, mine is too weaksauce to go through that kind of steel. How far apart are most studs, like 16" on center? The safe I'm looking at is only about 16.5"" deep, so maybe the back is all I can secure.
How badly are the fire insulating properties compromised by making holes like this?
You may be surprised to find that your ordinary drill will go through that safe wall in about 8 seconds. Get some really big wood screws and washers and go about 3 inches into a wall stud. Don't forget to lube the wood screws with soap or something or it will take forever to screw them in.
When you move out just spackle and paint.Better Way to Search CalGuns - https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=0...78:pzxbzjzh1zk

Remember a safe just slows down a determined thief, nothing is theft proof. Every step you can take helps! I lived in apartments for a few years, I chose to use large wood screws(lags) when I was on a wood floor, and a few simple concrete bolts when I was on the bottom floor. Easy to cover up and correct. I do not live in an apartment any more and I have "secured" my safe in the best way possible I can do . I found puting the safe in the most inconvient place is the first step. If a thief cannot easly drag or bring the safe out of the home that beats any bolts to the ground that can be broken or removed.NRA MEMBERComment

It's a 500 sq ft apartment. It's not like I can hide it in the basement, under the stairs, behind a false wall.Comment
