    I used to shoot something like that when i shot Small Bore...in ROTC, in High School, in San Francisco

    You have to understand the concept. You are bringing your upper arm down to your body and supporting the rifle vertically on your hip by leaning backwards and displacing your COG. It is very stable, but it can really tweak your spine...think of how much further back you'd have to lean without the mag there

      The reason you place your left hand (if you're a righty) that far forward and towards the front sight is to get some control on top of the bore. It's intentions are to reduce muzzle flip. It works well.

      At first, it was very unnatural for me. Now, it's simple muscle memory. Shooting the old traditional way feels awkward and unstable. It's all about preference. There is physics behind why the competition style shooting can reduce flip, but whatever floats your boat.
