    Inherited a Colt AR question

Hey guys Im wondering what the laws are on this topic? I was told by my grandfather that I would not be able to register the A-2 in my name because of CA laws. Is any of this true? Is there a website I can go to possibly besides DOJ to find info?

Obviously to take it out of the safe I would need to buy a bullet button for it, but I would hate to get stopped with it not registered to me?

    Any info. would help. Thanks!

Your grandfather is right AND I'm glad that he's here to tell you.

Here's the opening line to the link...

Your grandpa probably knows his Colt AR is on the ban list. Assuming he is correct then you cannot have his AR. You can buy a off list lower and transfer all the other parts though.

What if I am not sure if it was registered prior to the ban? How would I find out?

Also, because he is still alive does this mean if it was registered afterwards it can be transfered to me as long as it complies with the assault rifle flow chart?

Where neither party to the transaction holds a dealer's license issued
pursuant to Section 12071, the parties to the transaction shall complete the
sale, loan, or transfer of that firearm through a licensed firearms dealer
          pursuant to Section 12082.

I'm in the same situation with and old(A-1 fore-end) Bushmaster. My plan is to buy an OLL and sell/trade the old lower to a licensed dealer if they want it.

              lawfully possessed
a firearm subsequently declared to be an assault weapon pursuant to Section
12276.5, or subsequently defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Section
              12276.1, shall, within 90 days,
              render the weapon permanently inoperable,
sell the weapon to a licensed gun dealer,
The chair is against the wall...

what DLS said. here's the entry in the DOJ website:

"Can I inherit and keep a registered assault weapon?
No. Pursuant to California Penal Code section 12285(b), any person who obtains title to a registered assault weapon by bequest or intestate succession shall, within 90 days, render the weapon permanently inoperable, sell the weapon to a licensed gun dealer who has a permit from the Department of Justice to purchase assault weapons, obtain a permit from the Department of Justice to possess assault weapons, or remove the weapon from this state.

Things California calls 'assault weapons', registered or not, cannot be transferred in California to a CA resident. Full stop. That's the point of the law. G60 and DLS quote proper authority.

Most Colt AR types are 'named' - they cannot be made to follow the flowchart, except that they kick out on the 'illegal' path at "is the rifle listed in appendix B or C?"
