The least we can do aside from telling him how much this topic has been addressed is post links to previous threads...

I have all 3 calipers and I just perfer the feel of my 45's the most. I reload so all my practice ammo is unexpensive.

Next is the 1911 versus Glock thread.
Then we can get to AR versus AK.

Well Hurry Up and enlist a different Noob to start the Mossberg vs Remington Shotgun thread! I want to reparticipate in the 1911 vs Glock argument discussion...

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Oh really why is this?! And do you know where they get their cheap ammo? they are always talking about that.

I shoot just fine with all of them, though the best with .40. But that is because I have the most trigger time with .40. If I feel like going cheap I'll just bring along my .22LR conversion slide.

In terms of concerns over power, it is all BS. A threat will be stopped if you hit an attacker in a critical location with a 9mm. This bigger is better is just plain silly, there is no, more dead and less dead. How quickly people forget that the diameter of the 9mm is just a few thousandths of an inch smaller than a .38 or a .357 magnum. How quickly people forget just how effective the Uzi was or just how much success the MP5 has achieved. The 9mm sucks yet it is currently the most popular round for personal defense, military/LE sidearms, and LE submachine guns. It all comes down to location, if you miss you miss. But an attacker with a 9mm in his CNS isn't less dead than an attacker with a .50 BMG in his CNS.

Considering all the money that goes into researching self defense rounds, I would suggest you take advantage of it. I personally think that Hornady knows a lot more about making defensive loads and how effective they are than some joe who reloads.

I am buying a glock 17, mostly because ammo is so cheap, and that helps in more range time, and after talking to many people ie, turners, and my local shooting range, both agree that 9mm is plenty for home personal protection, but a reloading friend of mine is in the group that believes bigger is better. So, what do you my fellow calgunners think?
I'm a 9mm fan and think it is pretty good for SD. However, CA laws does favor the .45acp for defensive situations due to the 10-rnd mag limit, so for CA, I'd say .45acp is better than the 9mm if you must compare the 2 for that purpose in CA.

When I'm picking up 9mm for under $200 per 1k rounds, and when using Federal HST for HD/SD, I see no reason to run a .45 unless it just floats your boat.

True, 9mm is a lot cheaper, so for practice, it is, IMHO, a much better choice than the .45acp.

However, the OP's concern seems more SD oriented. In this situation, if you can only have 10+1 rnds of 9mm or .45acp, I'd give the .45acp an edge over the 9mm.
