I got gamo big cat. Lots of power and very accurate compared to any pump pneumatic but can be loud. My suggestion is if you want to shoot in the backyard, set up a pellet trap made out of phone books newspapers and such quiet materials besides a metal trap. Then just shoot from inside the house with the door or window only cracked open just safely enough to shoot thru

I made a nice pellet trap. I set it on a chair in the front bedroom & shoot down the hallway from the living room. I got 10 meters! I put the dogs outside as they don't like it. I don't do it when Wifey is home, either.

I bought one of those Air Tech air rifles they advertise in the NRA Mag. It's a CO2 w/ a thumbhole stock. Aperature sights. I did smooth the sear & it it shoots real nice & accurate. I paid about $180 delivered a few years ago.

Most cities have local ordinances that prohibit air guns within city limits. Usually you can find these ordinances on the city web site.

Luckily I'm able to shoot where I am, and the garage makes a good place for air gun practice on rainy days. I built a backstop box out of plywood, with a 1/4" metal back plate inside and stuffed it with phone books. I staple scrap cardboard to the front and staple the targets on that. Mostly I can hear the spring in the rifle and the thwock of the pellet hitting the phone books.

Spring air rifles generally are not all that quiet, even the 'whisper' ones. The shroud may lessen the sound of the air coming out, but it can't quiet the 'sproing' of the spring. I've read that the Nitro Piston guns are much quieter.

So I'm seeing some referred to as "Spring Piston", is that the same as "Nitro Piston"?

I guess I want something with enough velocity to be good training and fun, (not lobbing shotputs @ the target) but quiet.

Can you get into a decent Nitro Piston rifle for less then a couple hundy?

Or instead of buying a pellet gun, and given that you legally able to shoot your gun where your at...if you already have a 22lr, buy some aguila Ss or something. Their super quiet and they make half the sound my airgun(benjiman Sheridan) makes.

But that's if you have a 22 too.

AFAIK, the Nitro Piston is not the same as a Spring piston.

Here's a selection of Nitro Piston rifles from Pyramyd Air. As you can see, they run from mid-$100 to mid-$200. Personally, I'd go for one of the Benjamins:

Just saw a Benjamin "Regal" NP @ Big 5 for $229, but I can't find that same model online anywhere to compare price, anybody know about that model?

If you are worried about legality or the neighbors you could get a pellet pistol and practice in a garage. Just fill a box with newspaper so they don't come out. Oh and get a big enough box so you don't miss and scratch the car.

That's where the rule: "Keep your finger off the trigger until you have a sight picture" really comes in handy!

If I'm in the garage with a pellet gun, the wife's '64 Rambler convertable (that she's had since high school) is NOT in the garage!

I scratch that baby and I might find myself lonely on the couch at best, or on the wrong end of one of my real guns at worst!

Ok Looking at this tread it appears you want a nice accurate Target Air Rifle. The target rifles designed for 10 meter competition are very good. They have less power then ones designed for hunting and tend to be much more quite.
An inexpensive one is called the Daisy powerline Targetpro. You can add various sights both front and rear.
In the same price range as the Gamo Whisper is the Daisy Avanti 853 series of Air Rifles which are quieter and better designed for back yard / indoor target practice.

Indoors these work will with inexpensive pellet traps such as the Crosman 850 with a sheet of 3/4 in plywood to catch the enevitable flier.

Your best bet may be to go to the pyramyd air site and check out there line of Competion/Target rifles to find the one that serves your best needs.
