Air Rifles

I'm thinking of getting an air rifle/pellet gun so I can train in the back yard.
I figure it would be a good way to stay sharp and get trigger time when I can't go shoot my real guns.

What brands / models do you guys like? I don't want to spend ridiculous money on one but I don't want a Red Ryder either.

I was looking at a couple of Gamo's (Whisper, and Silent Cat? I think) that have suppresors on them since the spot where I can get the longest shots in my yard would be on the side of my house between mine and my neighbor's house and don't want to disturb her.
Are these really quiet?

Also, where to look for the best prices?

I guess the ones with suppresors are looking that much better.

I used to shoot Crossman Pneumatic pistols and carbines as a kid. I still shoot a 1377 pistol every now and then. Its cheap, durable, and accurate. Also, I like being able to vary the velocity of the shots with a pump.

A few years ago I found out that people were even customizing them, do a google search and you'll find some cool stuff.

Well I was just doing some research and reading reviews on Gamo's website, and it sounds like the suppressors don't make them much quieter. May need to go sub-sonic.

Illegal here in Cow Town too. Find the local ordinances for your town on the web and read them carefully. It's not consistent across the state. Where I am you can't legally shoot a slingshot in your backyard, let alone an air rifle.

I have a Gamo Whisper. While the pellet is quiet, you can't make the sound of the spring quiet. I even have the pneumatic spring in mine. You also can't hide the sound of the pellet hitting the target.

You will need a very good pellet trap. My Whisper can put the lightweight raptor pellets an inch into a 2x4.

"If I were to shoot it on the side of my house," I would only shoot a few shots at a time and then put the gun in the house. I might even have a hammer and piece of wood nearby that I might hit every once and a while to give the sound of making something. But that would only be IF I were to do that.

I bought a Remington Vantage last year just to play around with. Pretty impressive fps specs. Big 5 had it on sale for $129 I think, msrp $199. Not real quiet. Here is one at Bass Pros http://www.basspro.com/Remington-reg...02702/-1598850

Its not illegal statewide as far as I can tell. It just comes down to local county/city ordinances.

Yeah, sorry I didn't mean to be blunt, I looked up Camarillo MC and it appears to exempt discharge of pellet rifles as well as other air guns
Simi exempts paintball and airsoft guns but no pellet rifles.

Illegal where I am at too. I wanted to get one for my son, but couldn't. He got a 22 instead.

Most larger air rifles are spring piston and will make some noise, especially for the first 50 shots while the chamber lube is burning off (dieseling), and their triggers aren't great. I would suggest a higher quality, lower power air rifle of 600 to 700 fps, maybe even a match air rifle. The triggers are great and they are quiet enough that you can shoot them anywhere. I have powerful "Magnum" rifles and while they are great for hunting and long range shooting, my match air rifle is a lot more fun to plink with and no danger of over penetration or ricochets. The RWS 24 and Beeman R7 ( HW 30) are both great rifles with great triggers and low noise. Indoor shooting is easy with scope or iron sights.
