    range observation

I notice a **** load of bullet holes in the ceiling at ranges..

Not only in the target area..but also in the pubblic area.

What the hell are these people doing??

    Accidental discharge..okay..

But c'mon some ceiling tiles look like they were hung on the clamps and got unloaded on

Maybe you should be glad your not there when it happens. When I was doing my POST firearms training there was a little animal Cop girl shooting a Ruger. The grips were way to big for her and she shot my target twice.

I've seen that at the Gun Room in Elk Grove (yeah, I know). The sad/scary thing is that there is an angled part of the roof that's maybe 7 feet in front of the firing line and that thing has holes in it. Srlsy? 7 feet?

I have seen this at EVERY range I've been to. Holes in the ceiling, scuff onthe angle irons, holes in the benches, chips out of the floor, chips out of the sidewalls, you name it. I've seen it live a number of times when someone a few lanes down will hit the carrier and it'll jiggle around wildly for a while, and there's a sparking and some attendant lead dust.
          "Two dead?!? HOW?!?"
[sigh] "Bullets, mortar fire, heavy artillery salvos, terminal syphilis, bad luck --- the usual things, Captain."

I find most indoor ranges to be poorly ventilated, so I always shoot a few holes through the ceilings to ensure that I enjoy a nice, refreshing draft during my shooting session.

An associate of mine put a few of those there. Every time he inserted a new mag, he would fire the first round without aiming. Imagine the position your hand/firearm is in when loading a new mag, barrel downrange but elevated, hand turned to the side. He would release the slide in this position and almost immediately fire a round.

I don't go shooting with him any more.

I can't say that I've seen this. Although, I've only been to two indoor ranges.
One thing I have noticed is ridiculously chewed up ceiling tile from empty casings ricocheting.

The other thing I've seen is the opposite of what you're describing. I've seen people aiming/shooting far too low and seeing a spray of sparks fly off the ground at about 20 yards out. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.

Think about it for a second..... a person who has never touched a gun before, can go into a public range, pay a fee, get a 2 minute briefing, and go off on their own to shoot.

I remembered thinking the exact same thing you did the last time I went to the range. I even saw bullet holes on that plastic table where you put your gun on. It's actually quite a big risk going to a public range.

I like the holes in the ceiling at the gun rental counter.... Look up the next time you are there. I laugh every time.

Is this normal? Any stats on injuries? I've never been to a range, but thought about it - now not so sure I want to!

I was at Firing Line in socal last weekend and there is an awning with steel poles in the ground that span maybe 15 to 20 feet in between..... well someone put a bullet through one of the posts and I thought WTF? What's worse is that it was at a sever angle, meaning the gun went off across the range not straight ahead toward the targets. I don't get how someone can blow a hole through steel post at an outdoor range, incredible!

Anyone been to our favorite gun shop in Martinez?
Next time you are there, look at the wall opposite the cash register. (the wall to your left as you enter). These clowns shoot inside the building after hours!

Hell, I am a member of a private outdoor firing range with covered firing points---they have holes as well (none are mine)!
