Calling all UCD marksmen (and women)!

    Hey folks!
    It's been approved! Hurrah!

Is where one may join if they wish.

I've been interested in starting a recreational shooting club at UC Davis, with designs on eventual competitive shooting.
I'm getting ready to send in the application soon, but i'd like to get some idea of CGN interest.
SO, how many boomstick-savvy Aggies we got, who would want in?

That sounds very cool. Maybe you could get some helpful advice from the folks at SacValley on collegiate shoots. It would be even better if Davis offered a shooting scholarship.

I emailed UC President Yudof about an NSSF grant a while back, and he said Merced got it.

But that makes me happy that the UCs aren't entirely anti-gun haha.

I am hoping to start this as a broader recreational club, and then once there is a constant membership/some idea of who is skilled with what, moving into competition stuff.

When I was in college, I unfortunately slept through most of my years otherwise I might have something helpful to share with you about starting a shooting club.

Have you seen PullnShoot (I think I have his handle right) on CGN? He's in S. CA, so I haven't followed his campus projects closely, but I recall he had some sort of student-run shootoing event last year. Maybe chat with him for ideas?

Yeah, I have his contact info, and keep meaning to contact him, but I keep remembering at like 12am on a saturday...and the rest of my time is fairly stupidly taken up. I am going to get him at some point though; he may have pointers.

I've been thinking about starting a neighborhood shooting club and am considering becoming an NRA certified Instructor. Might be a good idea for a club like yours too, and I wonder if anyone has comments on what this involves?

Alright, just did the online orientation, and they emailed me the application stuffs. This is what it says I need to proceed:

                - Current number of members by classification/year in school.
                - Phone, email, address and student ID for 5 officers/representatives listed on form.
                - Phone, email and address for advisor if applicable.
                - UC Davis login ID for two representatives authorized to reserve rooms. If the login ID is not correct you will not be able to access the CES reservation website.

So that's why I am trying to figure out who wants in--I need a list of members, and then I need to get 4 officers out of that, too haha.

I am quite thrilled to think this might be within reach.

@Swiss: yeah, I figure I/others will need to do that before we can eventually transition from recreational to actual sport status.

Wow, i haven't even gotten a member list together, i'm getting ahead of myself haha.

                    Awesome, thanks!

I'm pitching the club as doing the following:

To provide a centralized body through which UC Davis students may:
-Engage in the recreational/competition/sporting use of firearms in a legal, safe, and controlled environment
-Become educated as to proper firearms handling and safety techniques
-Learn about firearms laws and regulations
-Learn about the historical, mechanical, practical, and artistic significance of firearms

I think it'd be good--get shooters together to practice, help create a positive image, and hey, if someone learns about gun safety or laws who had no idea previously, well, it pays for itself right there.

Ergo, sounds like you have a plan and am wishing all of you the best of luck.

You may want to include BigCaliDave and Lateralus in your project discussion since there may be other Calgunners in your county who can lend you a hand.
