How would a Polymer Gun do in a fire?

While sitting in the dentist chair I was wondering if i dropped my sigpro in a fire would the frame melt before the ammo went boom?

      Would it melt, yes.

Would it melt before the ammo cooked off, no.

Ammo cooks off at ~300-400 degrees. It takes a bit more then that to melt polymer.

It probably won't melt for a short amount of time, but if it is in an oven for an extended time...

Hmmm, but you're forgetting that a round in the chamber is more or less insulated from heat relative to the exposed polymer frame that would be taking direct flames. The surrounding barrel and other components would have to fully heat up for a chambered round to go off, but that could mean the polymer is at a much higher temperature by that point.

You're forgetting the magazine. I imagine that rounds going off in an inserted magazine would break the from of a polymer gun, and they'd likely break the frame on a metal gun(I don't see how they wouldn't). I see what you're saying about the chambered round being insulated, but there isn't as much of an area of insulation for the magazine.

would the chambered round really be all that insulated? it's in the barrel, with direct access to heat, and the barrel, bullet, casing, et. al. are all very heat conductive.

i'd guess the mag'd rounds were more insulated, personally.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

You've still got a lot thicker steel around the one in the chamber than you do in the magazine. Although I suppose there is still an airspace between the magazine and the frame.

Makes me wonder why mythbusters didn't bother with this...

Oh wait, they didn't bother because all of their testing is halfassed (I quit watching those guys a couple years back when I noticed a trend of sloppy testing that I could reproduce better on my own).

You're upset that you found out mythbusters is just entertainment?

neither metal nor polymer guns survive real fires
even unloaded, the metal parts lose their temper

I don't think mythbusters is supposed to be 100% scientifically accurate.

It's more of a "what if" show based more on scientific principles rather than the Johnny Knoxville Jackass method of discovering "what if".

I don't think Mythbusters has ever claimed otherwise.
