I spent 7 years in the Air Force from 1973 to 1980.
In that time i only fired the M-16 twice.
100 rounds in basic training, at Lackland AFB, Texas, and one other time at a German rifle range, while i was stationed in that country.
That's it. Hard to believe isn't it.
And it's called the "armed services"
A Marine sure would be laughing at an Air Force members shooting skills. lol.

lets not feed the trolls. there are career fields that live by their weapons. besides, the mission has changed since 1980. the civs aren't even aware that all airstrikes are called in by AF guys on the ground; or most convoys are run by AF. Oh yeah, remember somalia? those were AF in securing the injured guys in the helo.

In basic (mid 90's) I fired an M16 for a few hours and qualified. There were so many jams up and down the line that I think we put a total of 100 rds downrange. No pistol and was never issued a firearm. Great group of people who value education and hard work and really nice looking ladies.
Best advice- bring only a toothbrush, never-ever raise your hand and run, run, run.

Just retired after 21 years in the AF. Qualified on M16 during basic and didn't qualify again until about 6 years ago. Shot expert the last 2 times. Never qualified with the M9 but did get to shoot one during a base "fun shoot".

The AF is definatly changing. Every Airman is now deployable and will probably see a regular weapons qual. If you get picked to deploy you recieve more indepth training.
If you want to piss off a liberal and help a conservative, ship a gun to California.

10yrs in the USAF, 80 rounds through an M-16 (40 x 2 quals). I did qualify as "Marksman). Never saw an M9 outside of a SF or aircrew's holster. If someone attacked I'd have to throw wrenches and hammers at them.

I'm on my way to work so I cant post it yet. We were doing some join op training and the Airforce had to fly in instructors to qualify them in the M9. This Aiman was telling me how much harder it was to qualify for the Airforce than Army qual so I took a video. On one side there was the Army qual at the 25 meter line. On the other was the Airforce at the 5 Meter line. I pan back and fourth. I'll post it sometime

Make sure your little bro brings more than a toothbrush. The recruiter will give him a list of what to bring and what not to bring. Tell him to memorize AF rank structure he needs to know symbol, grade, and name (silver oak leaf = Lt. Colonel = O-5) That should help him to start off with.

                    Hello,
I’m a civilian contractor stationed at Bagram AF, Afghanistan. Most of the Airman I see here carries either a Beretta M9 or M-16 A2. When I was active duty AF from 1980-86 I fired a total of 50 22LR in an original M-16 w/22LR conversion and 50 rounds of 38 Special through a S&W M-10.
                    Cheers,
                    W-W

Edit* damn cant use photobucket without putting my whole albums on blast. I'll youtube it later. night

When my father-in-law was with an engineering squadron in the air force whose job was to go into hostile areas and secure/establish air fields he said he had to regularly qualify with M-16's and handguns. Once he left this squadron for a tanker squadron, he never had to shoot M-16's again. He said he loved shooting the M-16's and misses it to this day.
