WWII sniper vet, still has it!

I actually thought it was very touching that they honored Mr. Gundy like this. It was a beautiful thing, and I even got emotional--in a manly way. No really, I just finished reading about Sgt. John Basilone today, so the perspective of all these guys is still fresh in my memory.

When I was around 10 years old in 1991, my dad took my brother and I to a veterans day ceremony near Fort Ord. There were a bunch of WWI vets walking around. Little did I know what that meant at the time.

As a grandson of a WWII vet this brought tears to my eyes. I wish there was more we could do for this great generation.

                  Great video!

These men are all heroes, yet they are so humble and think that they just did their part like everyone else.
If all of us were half the man Mr. Gundy is the world would be a better place.

As a side note, it also goes to show how much technology makes a difference.
He has the training, clearly. With the 1903 he did great, but with the 700 he rang three headshots in a row at 1000 yards.
Can you imagine fighting with the 1903 under WWII conditions?

The battles he was in would likely be well within the limits of his 1903. While the 700 is a great rifle for the 1000 yard shots, this isn't what was generally happening in the Bulge and Bastogne.

This man has skill, that's for sure. 5" groups at 1000 yards is doing very well, especially if this was his first time back behind the trigger, and on a new rifle might I add. I can only imagine the hard times and shots he had to make while serving. I often think of what my grandfather had to go through as a 20mm gunner in the Pacific with kamakazi's coming in, and then landing on Okinawa and having to fight in one of the worst battles.

Greatest generation for sure, it's painful to think how many WWII vets die every day.

I have to say the instructor at the end looked pretty surprised at how well he shot!

Yeah I know. The technology changes are still just incredibly because I mean when you get down to it the 700 and the 1903 aren't THAT different. It is just cool to think about.

                        Yeah, it is incredible.
I am guilty of often romanticizing WWII, with all its horrors.
But when you come from arguably the worst generation in American history it gives me a sense of pride to look back at what these men did.
I hope that maybe someday I can do my part too (if needed).

Optics are what has improved significantly since WW2 for snipers.
