When I told the guy I had a safe and could fill out the affidavit, he got mad at told me that I Should have notified him of that long before the paperwork was in progress...

I digress... Check to see if they charged you for a lock, and not just another handling fee.
They tried to charge me for the lock but I noticed it and pointed out to the guy that I had already signed the safe affadavit, so he took it off.

        example: DROS-$35, Storage/Handling - $25, Total - $60 ........ LEGAL!!

remember that DROS is just the cost of running the background check plus a little extra that the DOJ lets the FFL charge. As long as they aren't charging more for the actual DROS, they aren't breaking any laws. I know a place that charges $100 if you order something online and have it shipped to them

Some FFL's will get pissy about what kind of receipt you have (they want it to be from a store vs. buying for an individual party), so it makes sense to see if your FFL is a doosh about the receipt or not.

INAL so the above is my understanding only.
Yes some ffls will charge you for a lock on HANDGUNS simply because they have a different inturpritation of the law... butttt the op is talking about a rifle so that point is moot lol

You've got it backwards. Cal accepts the affidavit and the federal law requires a lock (no 30 day receipt though).

at least they didn't charge you with the $25 safe handgun demonstration fee like Sportsmen's Supply in Campbell.... I try and take every opportunity to mention that they rip people off when threads like this come up so no one gets stuck dealing with them.

My friend got charged $60 for a PPT. The clerk justified the extra $25 for storage fee. I'm going to do some investigating to figure out how we can report this. The gun store is located in Ventura County.
