    Misinformed Letter to Editor

    Please relocate if wrong forum:
    --
As per "Letter to Editor" North County Times.

    Another gun loophole

Another senseless slaughter by a sick individual with an extended ammo clip in an automatic weapon. Illegal under the Assault Weapons Ban that was allowed to expire in 2004, these weapons are designed for the sole purpose of mass destruction. Hunters are required to license their shotguns and themselves. Giving their prey a "sporting chance," they are only allowed three shells per load.

You cannot legally own machine guns, cop-killing bullets, undetectable plastic guns or anti-aircraft weapons. The point is, we already have gun control. The gun lobby has nothing to fear, and this issue should be apolitical. Weapons of mass destruction shouldn't be available to the mentally unstable.

    More at link below:

It's no wonder that the general public has skewed ideas of guns and gun ownership when they are subjected to misinformation like the letter above. (I have sent a rebuttal but it may not be printed in a timely manner as per the Times' 14 day letter policy). I hope some Calgunners and others respond to correct some of this gentlemen's misinformation
    Respectfully

I love how "Weapons of Mass Destruction" has morphed from Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological weapons to...... Police-issue handguns.
    Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

I quite agree the mentally unstable should not have access to weapons of mass destruction.

One of the frequent symptoms of mental instability is hallucinations - seeing things that are not there.

There is no such thing as a 'cop-killing bullet', nor do 'undetectable plastic guns' exist in the real world. There is no law that makes ownership of machine guns and anti-aircraft weapons illegal to own (they are, however, regulated).

The attacker in Arizona did not have an 'automatic weapon'.

Communications of one's hallucinations belong in reports to one's mental health professional, not in a family newspaper.

You know and I know that a Glock 19 isn't an "automatic weapon" but my neighbor that also read the "letter" thinks that it is. I have yet to get it through to her that in fact it is not. I'm sure she isn't the only one that "read it in the paper" so therefore it is true. Heaven forbid she find out I own evil weapons of mass destruction.

I agree with the author on the point that WMD's should be kept out of the hands of the mentally unstable. There should be background checks for anyone wanting to own a steath bomber armed with nuclear weapons for example.

Stupid people don't know they are stupid. Because they are stupid. They will follow evil geniuses and do their bidding, because they are stupid.

Really super stupid people look up to, and follow stupid people like they were geniuses, because to them, they are. Unfortunately the reality of it is, that doesn't make stupid people any smarter.

That right there is the root cause to most problems in the world.

too bad we can't demonstrate to our mis-informed neighbors what an "automatic weapon" is like.

I wrote a letter to the editer. I doubt seriously if they will publish it though. they seem to me to be pretty typical anti-media. But who knows, maybe someone reading it will actually start to think on their own. Maybe they will decide to not be sheeple. It could happen.

You might be surprised! I wrote a pro-gun letter to the San Diego Union Tribune last monday morning, in a response to some idiot's letter about how it's too easy to get guns. They put my letter in the tuesday morning UT!

I just wrote a response to that letter. We'll see if it gets published or not.
