Reeds not allowing certain brass looking ammo

Just a heads up as it might save someone a trip down there for no reason. Reeds indoor shooting rage in Santa Clara is being even more picky with ammo now. I got some RWS 9mm at Walmart a while back because that's all they had. It looks like brass but the guy at Reeds told me it was steel and they couldn't let me shoot it due to "safety concerns" He got a magnet and put one of my rounds to it, and it stuck.

Anyway, I went down to Target Masters and they were very nice, and didn't have a problem with it. They even had a hott girl working there.

I guess when I can afford to pay top $ for target ammo I'll try Reeds again, ie most likely never.

It's not a safety concern, they just can't reload it.

My point here is that some of the ammo that looks like it's brass is actually steel underneath. I thought I was getting brass and was fooled. I know Reeds just wants to be able to reload or sell the brass stuff off to a recycling place, or sell their own ammo. So if your ammo sticks to a magnet you won't be able to shoot it at Reeds.

You got lucky at Target Masters because they don't allow those ammo too.

Actually the RWS 9mm has a steel core bullet with a brass case. The cases are reloadable, but the steel core projectile sparks on their backstop. I've seen this at Reed's and they made the shooter stop using it. It has nothing to do with them not being able to reload or sell the cases. The reason they don't allow it is either fire related or due to damage to their backstop.

                ^^ This is Correct...

I was stopped from shooting this ammo in Houston by the RSO. I too saw sparks off the backstop and the RSO freaked.

I've seen targetmaster's check ammo for steel cores also. Likely due to the same reason as Reed's, the backstop.

That said, Reed's sucks anyway. Had 'em tell me the only way an AR was legal in CA was if it was one of the sealed mag well topload bushmasters or something similar. If that wasn't bad enough, their douchey attitudes got on my nerves when I want to actually handle something behind the counter(I was actually pistol shopping at the time). It reminded me of an experience in REI a few years prior when I wanted to look at some pricey sunglasses and before the clerk took 'em outta the case looked me up and down and repeatedly told me how expensive they were.

The grumpy old guy attitude at some gun shops I can deal with if I have to. The douche-like snob attitude I will not put up with.

Typically they don't. But during last year or even year before when ammo was hard to get, they allowed it. I'm unsure if they revoked that flexibility since I've not been there for months.

Sounds more like their staff being as inconsistent as usual with their policies.

Reeds is selling 'black' rifles now. A few years ago I asked Reed himself if I could order a Remi AR-15. He went bananas and acted like I was asking him to do something illegal. I guess he was still sore about what happened at the old store. I was in there yesterday and they have an R-15 and R-25 on sale there now.

I hear Valkyrie Arms in Milpitas is the place to go now.

it was actually on a printer paper posted by the doors and stuff so it seemed official. but.. may not be allowed now. just saying when the times got tough for them, they were flexible else they're not going as much as they can in there.

I've been told to not shoot steel core/jacketed ammo before but turning someone away because of the casing sounds odd to me.... So, because they can't make an EXTRA buck off of you, they don't even want your business at all?

That just sounds like a bad business model. Is it like this at other shooting ranges?

My local range does the magnet thing, too.

I thought I'd scored some range friendly 7.62 x 54R for my Mosin with a box of WWB... got it home & my magnet grabbed right hold of the projectile!
