Should I really be using gun socks?

So I keep all my firearms in my floor safe. I have packets of silica in there. Putting gun socks on my rifles seems like a real PITA. I have a few AK's, AR's a shotty, etc. I clean and lube them up and put them away.

I don't own one of those golden rods or other stuff. Maybe thats the solution? Maybe the gun socks are needed?

Gun socks seem to be more to prevent dings and scratches that might occur in a safe, at least that's why I use them. I don't bother putting them on my AR or my home defense shotgun since those are in and out of the safe regularly and I don't really care about cosmetic blemishes like I do on some of my rifles.

Goldenrods are cheap, but the rechargeable dissicant should work just fine too.

I don't know how your floor safe is set up but I would use the socks for the same reason devilinblack stated. If the guns don't get pulled out regularly then the socks would help prevent them from banging into each other and causing blemishes.

The silica packets should be enough to eat up the moisture.

I mainly use the socks for when I am transporting my guns.

I have everything in either cases or gun socks for a couple of reasons. The ARs don't fit in socks well due to the pistol grip, so they live in cases.

The main one is dings. After I dinged up my nice walnut 10/22 stock, I started putting everything that would fit in a gun sock. It helps protect scopes from scuffs as well. Plastic stocks aren't such a problem, and if your safe's not too stuffed, it's no big deal either.

The second one is backup against rust. Stuff happens, and a silicone gun sock is good insurance against other problems.

They're also good for transport, especially if you put multiple guns in a hard case and they slide around any.

I have a goldenrod, and just went for about a year without one when my first one failed after about 5 years. No rust problems with anything yet.

I like goldenrods better than silica because you don't have to mess with them once they're installed, but you do want to check that they're warm now and again since anything electrical can fail.

Instead of gun socks, take a look at Bore-Stores. They sell them at Midway, Cabelas, etc. You see these at gun shows too. They are better than gun socks and fit a lot of designs including ARs

gun socks are great for heirloom quality rifles that you dont want to have dinged up or rusted. they really do prevent moisture damage from what ive seen (as in, ive gotten moisture damage when the desiccant wore out, some rust spots on exposed guns; yet the socked guns were fine!) and they give a nice buffer from getting rashed up in the safe. im not the most agile firearm-in-the-safe stacker. its also nice when going to do a ppt on a long gun. take it in wearing the sock, then just stuff the sock in your back pocket to do the paperwork, and not have to kick or lug around an unwieldy case.

That must be one big floor safe! As I picture a floor safe as one embedded into the floor.

I keep some of my long arms in the silicone socks. Others bare in another safe. I've noticed no difference in rust protection. The socks do allow the arms to be stacked closer to each other without the worry of damage.

i use gun socks and desiccant. even with desiccant, i wonder if there's moisture trapped there as m. sage says. i'm hoping not and that's where the desiccant comes to play.

there are larger gunsocks now in midwayusa.com for ar type rifles. it's a pita having to slowly put the thinner rifle gunsock on an ar.

Bore stores does make one for the AR, model# SRC-2, fits AR-15/M16 42", Brownels has them. I use them on all my rifles, ARs, shotguns, pistols except for the home defense weapons. They do take up more room but keeps the safe queens in mint condition. I also use a golden rod.
