    Exploding Targets - Tannerite questions

Excuse my ignorance on the subject; also if this is a dupe. I searched and didn't come up with anything.

What's the deal with exploding targets? Met some guys out in BLM land that had the stuff and it was friggin awesome. They ordered it off Cabelas, but said you can make it yourself also. Seen 'em on TopShot as well. Saw one recipe online, but as a scientist my chemistry schooling told me NO-NO.
Anyone know somewhere local to SoCal (O-side,South OC) where you can buy it? Anyone know how to make it legitimately or any other details? I am jones'n to try this with the long range rifles

hmmm, Costa Mesa gun show isn't until the end of November. Might have to hit the Ventura one...
No one else has seen this being sold locally?

Is that stuff really legal for us?

It's discussed in this older thread:

I'd say no, 12312 P.C. is a catch all of sorts and I could see a problem possessing/using it. There's kids being prosecuted for dry ice bombs these days. I wouldn't go near Tannerite.

12312. Every person who possesses any substance, material, or any
combination of substances or materials, with the intent to make any
destructive device or any explosive without first obtaining a valid
permit to make such destructive device or explosive, is guilty of a
felony, and is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for
                  two, three, or four years.

I remember shooting small exploding targets way back when at Nationals in the South Bay, hell they even sold them there. The were smallish squares with a sticky backside so you could stick the square onto your paper target. They eventually stopped selling and allowing the use of them. Don't know why, maybe all the paper targets catching on fire lol.

From what I understand from the Tannerite website, this is legal to own. Go to their site and read...

It is legal to ship (unmixed), legal to possess, but NOT legal to use. 12312 P.C. pretty much covers it...think about it. It's an explosive. Now....if you had a ranch with a couple hundred acres you'd probably be ok....but in CA? I wouldn't advise it unless you were MILES from anyone.

Exactly like BLM land. I fully intend to buy some tannerite online and have it shipped to me. Legal. I know spots north of Barstow where I get 10 miles off road. I am going to use some out there. BUT, I also know that there is a chance, however small, that I could get busted. But I've been isolated enough in the past to feel comfortable enough to risk it so....
