    AR-15 questions

Just wondering if anyone could answer an upper question and direct me to inexpensive ammo for an AR-15. I bought my JD complete upper from a gun show, its not marked what caliber (5.56 or .223) and I'm assuming it has a 1:9 twist, no markings on the barrel at all. The dealer ( not JD) said it was 5.56 but how can you tell? I really want to take it to the range but don't want to put a lot of money up for ammo and find out I chose the wrong caliber or worse yet hurt my first AR build. Any guideance would be helpful. Thank you. I've been told to stick with brass ammo because steel casings don't perform well in a hot barrell???

take some picture...maybe there's marking that you missed. use .223 to be on the safe side (if you dont know why, search up different between 5.56 and .223).

      Here's the ammo http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=348696

If the upper is a M4 look-a-like then I would guess its a 5.56. If its a Varmint upper then it could be either. Have you try looking under the handguards for ID?

for ammo,go to the costa mesa show next month and buy from miwal.
500rds of .223 for $139.00 lake city brass reloads, thats what i use and have no problems.
wolf 500rds for $119.00 if you like the cheap russian ammo, some guns don't like this stuff-some do... mine don't ,i have a stag 3h upper paired with a jd lower.

On cheap ammo, see if your rifle can cycle inexpensive russian. $4.19 a box, and its all I shoot with mine (JD machine lower + S&W upper). 25 boxes they drop to $3.99 each so that's $99.75 + shipping for 500 rounds, but I'd just try a few boxes first before you are sure you get 100% reliability. I think the bear ammo is better than wolf personally, even though they are usually the same price.
