    Need help- Moving to CA

I recently found out that in a little over my month I will be moving for Michigan to California due to my job. Here in Michigan I enjoy hunting and target shooting and I would like to bring my guns with me when I move to California. I have a couple shotguns, a few rimfires, and a 9mm handgun.

I am wondering what I have to do to take these guns into California. Are there forms I need to fill out? Will I be able to take my handgun with me? The handgun has a 16 round magazine; will I need to buy a 10 round magazine and leave the 16 round magazine in Michigan?

I would really appreciate any advice anyone might have. Here in Michigan I enjoy migunowners.org and when I found this website I thought it might be a great place to get some advice.

    Thanks,

    Travis

I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong section

when you move to CA, you will need to leave any large capacity magazines (11+ rounds) behind, or permanently block them to 10-rounds. You can also bring them in disassembled, but you may not assemble them into a large-cap magazine while in the state.

Look at the 3 AW flowcharts to see exactly what is and isn't legal to bring into the state. Any handguns you bring into the state will need to be registered with CADOJ within 60-days of bringing them into the state.

I would suggest looking at the Handgun roster, http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/ , and purchasing any handguns you think you might want, but aren't listed, now, before you move into the state. If you like specific handguns like Colt Pythons, it is a lot harder to get them while you live in CA due tothe roster. Buy them now and bring them in with you.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Welcome to CA Travis, you're going to love the weather, especially if you're coming to the Bay Area.
Here's what I know, your pistol will have to be registered within 60 days. Ten round mag for sure, I could be wrong but I think you may keep your 16 round mag but it must remain disassembled. No registration requirements on long guns,,, yet.

Glad you found calguns. If you've got a few extra bucks (which may not be likely after you start paying CA taxes) send a regular donation to the Calguns Foundation, a legitimate tax deductible organiozation fighting to regain 2ndA rights for everybody.

To add on to what the others have posted.

You use the New Resident Handgun Ownership Report to register all the handguns you bring with you to CA. There's a $19 per handgun fee.
After establishing residency in CA, you have 60 days to send in the form with applicable fees to CA DOJ BOF.

Welcome to Calguns Travis !!! Like ke6guj said, get the toys you can't get here. The roster is very specific. for example: Colt Python Elite is ok to buy, but the older Python is not. So look carefully at the roster !!!

            This is all great info.

However, I would like to add: As a gun owner in Ca, you'll need to get accustomed to unusual pain and a general feeling of nausea. I recommend the following preparation... punch yourself in the nuts every 30 minutes, from now until moving day. If you can handle it... welcome to California!

            I kid sorta

The best advise is to read the flow charts (pistol, rifle, shotgun), stock up on any off roster pistols you may want in the future, and make sure all of your guns are Ca compliant.

Welcome to Calguns! This site is jam packed with info. Do some reading, use the search, and don't be afraid to ask questions

Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it. I look forward to spending some time on this website in the future.

I'm just glad to hear I can take all my guns along. I will be moving to the bay area so I'm excited about the warmer weather during the winter months. Shooting in Michigan from about December to March is pretty cold.

Thanks for the link for the paperwork, I will be sure to fill it out when the time comes.

                    yup, that is fine.
tubular magazines on rimfire rifles are exempt from the 10-round limit on large-capacity magazines.

yes they can. That is actually one of the primary methods of off-roster handguns hitting the second-hand market.
