    First AR Build

I'm new to calguns (great sight by the way), my first AR build brought me here. I'm doing a low cost build for my first so I can devolop a baseline model that I can expand on. I want this one to be a 16" & would like to be able to feed just about any ammo through it. I have a JD lower & DPMS LPK. So, Here are my questions (they've all probably been asked before)

    1. What kind of barrel to us?.....SS, Chromoly, Chrome lined ( how big of a difference does it make? )

    2. Twist ratio?....1:9 is the most common but what are the benefits to 1:7

    3. Does the mid length perform better do to having a longer gas tube?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, Ive asked these questions to my Local IE gun stores, either they aren't that into AR's or they seem to lean to their products as the answer. That and who wants to give up info to help you make a purchase somewhere else?

Welcome to Calguns !!! Great to have you with us.
    1. If you are not gonna do tons of shooting then a moly barrel would work, then are usually the least expensive. A chrome would last longer, but accuracy would be a tiny bit off. A SS won't last as long as a moly but you don't have to worry about rust, they are also very accurate. So if a low cost build is what you are looking for then go to Mark's Armory on the top of the page under sponsor's directory and look for their CMMG rifle kit for $499. That should make you happy.
    2. I would recommand a 1:9 because the majority of surplus and low cost rounds are 55gr. The 1:7 are better to stabilze a heavier bullet.

I hear BCM has superior quality, but unfortunately can't afford one right now, I'll probably regret it, but I'm getting real itchy to go send rounds down range. The serenity it brings the hot brass, the focused breathing, the rounds dead center mass in a nice tight grouping...sorry I was fading out for a second
