30-06 a copkiller

so i was watching Animal Cops: "Philidelphia" on Animal Planet. the stories are always the same; SPCA gets a search warrant to retrieve mistreated animals and so forth. however this time, they find an old rifle loaded with 30-06. the cops say that the gun is a "cop killer" gun because the rounds were made to penetrate bullet proof vests . i was like "OMGWTF!!!!!!!" so i was pretty much pissed to no end about how the media always blows sh*t out of proportion. how do they know that gun isn't the homeowners grandfather's hunting gun? how do they know that the owner isn't a hunter or a target shooter? why do they call that round a "cop killer". correct me if i'm wrong but the 30-06 was made before the dawn of bullet proof vests right?

30-06 = .30 caliber cartridge of 1906. So yeah, that far pre-dates Kevlar body armor.

The media generally does blow things out of proportion, that's how they make their money.

I didn't see the show, but as for the rounds, could they have actually been AP rounds? .30-06 AP rounds are widely available and perfectly legal in most areas.

And yes, hippies stink.

Buttwipe Ted Kennedy beat Animal Planet to the punch a few years back when he tried to get 30-30 ammo banned because it will penetrate armored vests.

Not bashing any LE individuals but there are some that are not "informed" regarding ammo and guns. I have several LE friends and relatives who has told me about it.

That's a pretty stupid and misleading statement for a couple of reason.

1) Pretty much all "high power / high velocity rifle" rounds will penetrate the soft body armor police wear (which basically means any caliber rifle round meant to take meduim game. so I guess all hunters are also cop-killers too huh?), that's why the military wears rifle plates over their soft armor. Standard police body armor up to 3A is only for pistol rounds.

2) The "06" in 30-06 stands for (if I'm not mistaken) 1906, the year the round was invented. I dont think "bullet proof vests" existed in 1906, hence the round couldn't have been designed to penetrate something that wasn't in existence. Kevlar wasn't invented till the mid 1960's and didn't find it's way into use as body armor till the 1980s.
