Help about purchasing a firearm..

I bought a ruger yesterday at a local gunshop in Orange County. Everything went well with the purchase. Problem was when it came to the paper work. They asked to look at my Driver's Lisence and Vehicle Registration. The problem is that the addresses on both documents do not match. The address on the registration is more current. The dealer told me to come back with a new DL with the new address on it. I did some research and can't find any info that proof of residency have to be on the DL, and that a rental lease or a utility bill will do.

I don't want to spend hours at the DMV and pay for a $25 dollar fee if it isn't necessary.

Please those of you who have purchased a firearm give some input... You're help is appreciated!

your DL does not need to match the address that you list on the 4473/DROS. but if it doesn't, federal law requires you to have some sort of .gov document showing your current address. CA law also requires you to provide proof of residency when you buy a handgun in CA.

Here's another thing, I changed my address through the DMV website and they told me to write on the back in ink the new address. I also have proof that the address has been updated on the DMV website. Would that be another issue?

does it have your current address that you will list on the 4473? If so, yes, it would suffice as CA POR. regarding federal POR, it needs to be .gov issued, so vehicle registration would be fine, and a utility bill from a .gov agency would be fine as well. A private utility company would not work for federal POR. Use 10%'s cheat sheet, it goes over everything.

Is the dealer hassling me? My biggest concern is not being able to pick up the firearm on the scheduled date and not going to the range. I've paid alot of monet up front in cash and I really don't want to spend more on what isn't necessary.

when I used to live in Kalifornia, I ran into the same problem but produced my vehicle insurance card and that solved the issue

I was told by DMV that they do not issue new diver's licenses for address changes.

At a Big 5 here in Orange County, they took the little brown slip that you write your new address on after you submit a change of address with the DMV, as a form of valid ID, which is insanely stupid. At some other gun shops, they didn't take that little piece of self-written paper as a valid form of ID.

When I purchased my handgun, the address on my DL and my vehicle registration didn't match, and they don't have to. I just put down the address that was listed on my vehicle registration on the DROS form, which was my current address, and everything was fine.

they should accept a Rental Lease agreement along with a utility bill.
On the back of all DL's there is a place for an address change, (write in) area clearly marked Address Change.

Utility bill should be fine. Your DL info should match with the bill. That's what they're looking for, they're just doing their job.
