depends on what you want to do? want to travel with it (airlines/train), will need a hard case.

for just to the local range. will a hard case do? yes. probably protects better. but it's bigger, bulkier and not everyone has an suv or a big trunk of a caddy or dodge or gm. i have a s2000 and there's no way I can put a hard case. I couldn't even put the hard case my ptr came with in the trunk. LOL

so i stuck with soft cases. but think first before you buy in either case. i started with a 16" ar, and bought a case just for 16. then i had an ak and a longer ar. needed a longer case so another softcase bought. then i got a gsg which won't fit in my 16" barrel case unless i change the stock to collapsible (which i didn't like so much with the cheekweld, so i carried the stock stock with it). it would only fit in the bigger soft case and i can't bring my 20" barrel'ed ar then. so i bought another soft case but a dual rifle and larger.

now i have all these freaking soft cases. LOL

p.s. then i bought another soft case for my 870 express cuz none i have would fit it too!

Hard case; it just protects better. I carry my guns in hard case or no case, never really liked soft cases.

Hard cases protect better and tend to be cheaper than fancy soft cases.
