20 Miles? Where are you driving to? If you are in Temecula you might want to REALLY consider Rainbow Range.

That's what I do for the range (lock through the string loops).

soft cases will not work for pistols for transporting... needs to be a hard case that locks or put it in your trunk... same should apply to rifles only while travling through school zones...i read this a while back on this site..

            negative on each point.

The hard case requirement applies only to airlines. School zones only apply to handguns.

the only reason why i say soft case wont work for traveling is because i have never seen a lockable soft case. and you need a lock on your pistol case if you want to have it in the cabin of the car...(unless you are open carrying) or you could just put it in the trunk. thats all i meant... my bad about the rifle comment.

you have seen a pistol rug right? There are plenty of soft containers that can be locked.

Are you sure about that? Might want to check again.

It is my understanding that the GFSZ applies ALL firearms, not just handguns.

Speaking from personal experience, you can get locks small enough to fit thru the rings that the string pulls are looped thru.

No, not your bad. You are exactly correct on the rifles. Must be in a locked case while in GFSZ. Federal law, not California.

I'd loop the cable lock the state requires through eyes I'd put in the zipper pulls.

State law only applies to handguns. From everything I've ever been able to find, the federal law is unenforceable. I'm more concerned with 12031(e). I keep guns in my trunk just so that some anti-gun rookie doesn't have an excuse to detain me "for his safety" and dick around with every gun in the car "just to make sure they aren't loaded". There is no law or case to support it, but I've heard that a lot of officers are being instructed that seeing a gun case is sufficient probable cause that there is a gun present which allows them to demand an inspection per 12031(e).

Run a search here and again over at OCDO for: ULCC, and LUCC

Those threads discuss a number of different lockable soft cases, and ways to retrofit cases, and ways to make cases inconspicuous and so on.
