locking a rifle case thats zippered...

SO i have a voodoo tactical bag and the zippers dont have pull tabs. It has many spots for handguns and i want to have a way to lock it so i can legally transfer them in my car to the range and back etc.

You could try to get a lock that could fit through both of the holes in the zippers (that the strings are now passing through).

Or have a tailor put zipper heads with normal tabs on the case for you. (So that you could use a lock).

Or just have the Tabs put on the zipper heads that the case already has.

I'm sure there are some available solutions if you visit the hardware store for some metal rings or cable that you could permanently affix to the current zipper heads as well.

I have the same problem with a case I just bought. The factory installed tab you would lock the zipper to was installed on the wrong side (open end, not closed end). I'm eventually going to cut it off and repop rivet it to the other end (Which is how it is installed).

I'm sure you could come up with something similar.

i think the ring idea is the one i may go with.

One thing i was also curious about, If i put a locked pistol case in it like one of those soft ones....im assuming thats ok yeah?

Can't you just put a lock through the string loops?

Otherwise, buy some small key rings and replace the strings...

thats what i assumed, because it is such a big bag. Its for my AR and goodies with pistol pockets but since strings can be cut....i dont believe its a good idea

Go to a locksmith or key shop, they have those rings in different sizes for cheap.

If you did this, the test would be: Can you open the case without using a key(lock), the combination(lock), or any tools?

              If you can=fail

A bit of solder could fix that.

Other thought is you can replace the cordage with steel cable and crimped ferules. You could also stitch a D ring at one end of the zipper and lock the opposing zipper pull to it instead of locking two zipper pulls together.

In any case, a bag like that is a terrible option for security. Even if you beef up the zippers some how, lock them and tether it to something with a steel cable, it would amaze you how good some thieves are at slash'n grabs. Now I'd love to see a slash proof soft case designed to be padlocked with a steel tether cable built in, but until then about the only problems that locking a case like that solves are legal requirements and keeping kids out.

                    Any tools? Like cutters? Come on. A standard zipper on any gun case with a lock through it could be cut w/ a pair of dikes;

                    so regular zippers are "fail"?

Even using cables and ferrules would be easy to cut using "any tools".

Read carefully: If you can open the case WITHOUT... using.... tools=fail

i hope that includes "without damage" or any case can be smashed or torn open.

i would put a metal D ring on both tabs which, you could put in place permanently by using pliers.

Luggage cable lock. Not the most secure thing around but neither is a soft case.
