Police: Man Accidentally Shoots, Kills Himself

MARTINS FERRY, Ohio -- Investigators said 21-year-old David Yoho, who shot himself in the head on Monday, had purchased a gun on Friday.

Police told NEWS9 that witnesses said he was infatuated with it and could hardly put the gun down. But on Monday, things turned deadly when he thought the safety was on. He put the gun to his head and fired.

It was a .25-caliber handgun that police say Yoho purchased. According to Martins Ferry Police, his wife, Georgia, and two witnesses said they had warned him to put the gun down before someone was hurt, but he wouldn’t listen.

Monday afternoon, Yoho was showing the gun to two friends at his home on North Zane Highway. Police said that is when he put the gun to his right temple and fired, thinking the safety was on.

He was transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center, but died later that evening.

John McFarland, of Martins Ferry Police, said, “Based on the information she gave us, from the time he got the gun he was reckless about how he handled it. And she said multiple times she told him to put the gun away, and he was infatuated with it.”

Authorities have ruled out suicide and said it was an accidental shooting.

This incident is still under investigation. Police said the witnesses and Yoho’s wife are all being cooperative.

They must not have to take the handgun safety test every 5 years in ohio. this would never happen in california. See that silly test does save lives.
