The standoff alone makes me skeptical of the 'poor innocent man with a rifle got swindled' theory.
If I were in a situation like that - and the police showed up - i'd sure as hell want to get things sorted out as quickly and painlessly as possible. I wouldn't be getting into no standoff.
I suppose you can't really count on intelligence - but it just seems highly counter intuitive one would think an "Hours long standoff" productive in that situation.
I would also think that had the squatter really thought he had a reason to be there - he would have called the police himself.
Although one does have to question why on earth somebody would pull a gun on the owner of a house, tell them to leave their own property, and then stick around long enough for the cops to show up. That's kind of asking for a hassle right there.
