Assault rifle = rifle with select fire, capable of shooting more than one round per trigger pull inherently fully automatic or three round burst that our military uses.
Assault weapon = made up terminology for a semi automatic, one pull, one shot sporting rifle that just looks like a military rifle.

Who was it that had had a copy of the chart the media uses to identify assault weapons? It showed a picture of an AK47 listed as a M16, an M16 listed as an AK47, a car as an AK47, and so on.
