A 12 gauge with slugs? You bet. That's what the troopers carry in Alaska when they have to wander into bear country

Had a guy get attack during archery season. It was a dad and son hunt. Lucky the dad was a good shot. A heat attack the son and during te attack the dad shot the bear and after a few seconds of gnawing at the son it died...
Proves that it's not about size of caliber it's how you use it... Lol, no pea shooters thou.

Good to hear the guy is alive. The pain must be a life time though.

I think there was a bear attack in San Francisco once.

I would pack a Draco Ak pistol. You can keep it on a sling so it never leaves your body if you get thrashed and its short enough to wield and fire if the bear is on top. A 308 pistol would be better too.

Black bear attack just happened today:

Game wardens kill bear that attacked camper

(07-02) 20:16 PDT ELDORADO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. (AP) --

State wildlife officials say a bear that attacked a man at a campground in Eldorado National Forest has been shot and killed by wardens.

A spokeswoman for the California Department of Fish and Game says after dogs tracked the bear, wardens shot it around 6:15 p.m. Friday.

The animal, described as a 1-year-old black bear, was identified by its paw print. It was located about a a quarter-mile from where it slashed a man's face at a campground near Union Valley Reservoir around 2 a.m. Friday.

Fish and Game spokeswoman Kirsten Macintyre says the man, who was armed with a .45-caliber pistol, scared the bear off by firing a shot.

The man, who has not been named, required 26 stitches after the attack.

The campground where the attack took place is in a remote area about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento.

^^ I was thinking a nice AK pistol, or AK47 rifle would be a nice weapon to have in a bear confrontation. And of course some nice 30 round mags to add insult to injury.

I"ve quit believing that story. So far as I could tell, those statistics included any use of a gun at all, including many entirely inadequate calibers. I have a book that addresses the issue in a chapter with a picture of a little ol' .38 Spl revolver, which fits what a fair number of people seem to regard as adequate protection.

I want to see statistics with anything below .44 mag excluded before I believe the conclusions. I'd also like to exclude cases where the carrier didn't know how to use his firearm, but that would be a lot more difficult and subjective.

I have a strong suspicion that the statistics are done that way for the same reason the anti-gunners cite studies that count 25-year-old drug dealers as "children." I can't prove it, but I suspect that most of the people motivated to write about how to protect yourself in the wild are anti-gun.

What do you need guns for if you are going to send your children, seven hours a day, 180 days a year to government schools? What do you need the guns for at that point?-- R. C. Sproul, Jr. (unconfirmed)

If you're going to shoot a grizzly with your girly 7.62x39 toy gun, you'll need every shot in those 30-round mags.

No wonder it's so hard to keep city boys alive in the back country.
