    Bear attack

Think I would have shot more and curled up less, also would have been carrying a big bore in Grizzly/Brown Bear country. 375 mag is a damn good self protection round, when the danger is on two legs.

    Bear

Poor guy. It can happen to anyone who travels in Bear country.

A larger caliber handgun would have helped, but shots that actually hit the Bear would have helped more.

Can't blame him though. None of us know how well we'd shoot with a Grizzly bearing down on us running at full tilt. I'm not sure I'd hit it either.

    Regards,

    John

25 feet separation before the charge. Yikes. You'd have to have a pretty damn quick draw to get a shot off. On top of a larger caliber, I doubt I'd let the griz chew on me like that for that long. I'd be pumping shots into his belly while he was attempting to chew on me. I'd have figured I was a goner anyway.

I'm a hypocrite, been traveling in Grizzly/Brown bear country for the last 20 so odd days and don't even have a firearm with me. Traveling on company business, they won't let me bring a gun, I did buy a can 'Bear Repellent' though.

The guy did what he was trained to do, which was to roll over and present himself to the bear, NOT get good hits on the bear with a big-bore handgun or rifle.

we had another guy recently that was attacked while riding his bike. he successfully used the bike as a shield against the bear until it went away. can't even imagine how terrifying that must have been.

I think a Glock 20 with 15+5's would be a better bet against a Bear. 21 rounds of 10mm is definitely going to be an advantage vs 6 rounds of 357

That's NOT the point. If he wasn't going to fight back, then why was he carrying a gun?

^ Just in case he was in a situation where the gun would have been more applicable... say if the bear appeared and was showing aggression (like standing up and growling). He survived the encounter because his training was the best option for that particular scenario. Would a single shot stop a raging brown bear on top of you? 2 or 3? Probably not.. you've just pissed it off now and it isn't going to just walk away.

It would be a good death.

From what I hear the bear spray is more effective.

                            Yeah, I'd at least want a .44.

Maybe he can get his company to supply their field workers with S&W emergency survival kits, now.

What about shotgun against a bear? Will that be any effective?
