The last thing on a 556 I'd worry about is the barrel. Since the first Sig 550 ever made, with the cold hammer forging and nitride treatment, the barrel is expected to last you over 15000 rounds easy.

I'm not a metallurgist, but I do like planes, and nitriding/nitrocarburization has pretty much replaced hard chrome in cylinders and pistons is turboprop engines because of better wear and corrosion resistance compared to hard chrome. Nitriding has been used in firearms in europe for a while and I know for a fact, the original Swiss 55x series uses and continues too use the metal treatment. I know LWRC and CMMG have started to use the process on their products, don't know about others. Also it has been an high end barrel treatment for a while for long range shooters who say they have marked improvement in accuracy and life of their barrels. (They can't use chrome, because it changes the dimensions of their barrel, while nitriding does not).

The weight distribution is a personal preference, you really need to go hold one. I really don't find it a issue at all, but then again I'm a big boy.

I have had no problems with mine. Its construction is tight with minimum rattle. Takes standard At mags which is convenient with the ak47 s proven reliability with a piston set up. It is heavy, but it does not impede ones shooting.

I have a SIG 556 and several ARs. The SIG is front heavy, but I do have a Sampson rail kit, folding forward grip and a Surefire light hanging off the front. I personally prefer my SIG. It is dead reliable, runs cleaner than a DGI AR, and will easly hold MOA groups at 100 meters if I do my part.
