I'm thinking it might be a good idea to start a thread on ways to keep a low profile while transporting your legal OLL rifle.
I know "keeping a low profile" has been discussed before a few months ago, but I think it still warrants discussion, especially since we have some new members who are LEOs and will likely have some additional information to give us on the topic.
Here are some common sense things that I've seen posted, that I've read, and that I know from driving for 40 years.
1) Make sure everything on your car is legal. No loud exhaust, broken tail lights, expired plates or the like.
2) Your OLL should be locked in the trunk.
3) I know some people will disagree, but I think that you should have no bumperstickers of any kind. Same goes for window decals.
4) Drive within the speed limit, or if people are going faster than the speed limit, blend in with them.
5) On the freeway, stay in a pack of cars, don't stray out of the pack.
6) Follow all laws. This includes using turn signals, coming to a complete stop at stop signs, and the like.
7) Try to avoid looking like a hippie or a stoner. I know this will be hard for some people, but the more you look like an average Joe, the better.
8) Keep your car clean, both inside and out.
9) Don't keep anything on your dashboard that could create probable cause. One example would be earplugs.
10) If you get pulled over, don't admit to anything. A good example is the question, "do you know how fast you were going?" My standard answer is "no officer, I'm sorry but I wasn't looking at my speedometer." Probably not the best answer, but it's gotten me out of a couple of tickets.
Standard disclaimer, I am a lawyer, but I do not practice criminal law, and this is not legal advice. Use at your own peril, as Alison would say.
